Retrained and still in jobs

Working past 55 may face challenges including ageism, caring responsibilities, health concerns, and struggles to find information about new roles, opportunities are still available.

Dale Carroll, Sally Burnham and Georgina Winthrop are among the older Australians who have successfully retrained and taken on new jobs, giving them satisfaction and purpose. Rowan Cowley shares their inspirational - and achievable - stories here.

Others are of retirement age but either can't afford to, have found satisfaction in still going, or a mixture of both. Diane Benham, Murray and Dawn Garner and Everald Compton share their lived experiences of such scenarios here.

Senior's life

Have you ever fantasised about writing blissful and passionate love stories? We spoke to Fiona McArthur, who made this dream a reality as an author for romance publisher Mills and Boon, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Read her story with Eileen Wood, and win a book set here.

Bob Holder is the world's oldest competing cowboy at age 93. He proudly shares all his decades of knowledge with the young generation just starting. Read his amazing story here.

Are you tired of being referred to as a "Karen" and the term "Boomer" said in an eye-rolled, condescending tone? An ageism expert claims the overuse of such terms feeds fear between generations, causing a societal divide and burdening the economy. Desiree Savage reports.

Celebrity cooking identity Lyndey Milan still grieves the loss of her son to blood cancer - who only lived for three days after diagnosis. This is his legacy through her eyes.

Finance

Money woes from Aussie seniors form the basis of a new book about how to get your affairs in order and keep the peace among family members once you die.

Finance expert Noel Whittaker has published Wills, Death & Taxes Made Simple, which shares valuable tips on topics such as powers of attorney, superannuation, reducing taxes and legal bills, ensuring your children are taken care of after you die, and more.

Travel

Rail journeys allow you to appreciate ever-changing and diverse landscapes while covering great distances in comfort and style.

Reader Gaz takes us with him on an adventure through the middle of Australia aboard The Ghan.

You can also enjoy that train's beautiful interiors and excellent service when it runs between Brisbane and Adelaide near Australia's coastline as the Great Southern. Anthony Caggiano takes a deep dive into the scenery and a closer look at the menus on and off-board.

Plus there are many fantastic holidays on the tracks in Europe and beyond. Take a look at all this and more in our Explore section.

If you're going overseas, of course, you'll need a passport, but is the Australian one treated equally in every country? John Piggott gives you a heads-up of destinations with a few quirks, including needing at least six months of validity to determine how many blank pages are left. Get the details here.

All about you

The of August's 'Photo of the Month' is Philip Ruiters with "Lonely Fisherman", snapped at "Oliver's Corner".

How serene and relaxing is this shot? Philip Ruiters has won the Photo of the Month competition with this shot captured at Oliver's Corner.

Check out all the September competition entries in our full photo gallery.

From September 1, there will be no theme, but photos must have been taken from 2020 onwards. More details here.

Your letters to the editor submissions have been particularly touching and show the power of sharing information to empower and inspire people.

One anonymous reader reached out to say thank you for Eileen Wood's July cover story about Sharon, who shared her ongoing ovarian cancer journey. The letter writer was prompted to seek medical help for "women's issues", only to learn she had something far more sinister, and was grateful for the story's warning.
