The Scottish walk named after a Robert Burns poem perfect for Valentine's Day

With days to go until Valentine's Day, it's time to start thinking about how to spend the big day with your loved one.

While many couples will be looking to book an intimate dinner or romantic getaway, there are also plenty of ways to celebrate February 14 at a low cost for those struggling amid the cost of living crisis. For example, nothing beats a good walk with your partner.

There are countless picturesque walking and hiking routes all over Scotland, from Glen Coe to the Isle of Skye. One that is both scenic and has a fascinating history is The Birks of Aberfeldy in Perthshire.

Fans of Robert Burns will recognise its name as a song by the Scots poet written in 1787. Burns was inspired by the beauty of the area's woodlands as well as the nearby Falls of Moness waterfall.

Due to its association with the poem, the walk — which was originally called the Dens of Moness — is now referred to as the Birks of Aberfeldy. The attractive trail brings sightseers from around the UK and beyond.

In recent years, the ravine has been fitted with well-defined footpaths and bridges to improve the experience for visitors. The path also provides magnificent views of the roaring waterfall.

The trail also includes a monument of Robert Burns at its entrance. The statue shows the iconic poet composing the walk's namesake.

The Birks of Aberfeldy has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to offering prime conditions for the growth of mosses and ferns. It is also home to many species of birds, including great spotted and green woodpeckers
