The Oakley Meta glasses are advertised as a pair of glasses with built-in tech, meant to replace some of the things you’d normally use your phone for.
But according to one woman, they can do unexpected damage to your face.
In a video that has garnered over 398,100 views, TikTok creator Robin (@rockitrobin_) says wearing the glasses may have caused burns and irritation on her face.
What Does She Allege The Oakley Meta Glasses Caused?
“OK, don’t come for me… I didn’t want any filters on this ‘cause I wanted y’all to see something,” she says.
She then points to several marks on her face.
“Do you see these marks here, here, and here… this all happened because I bought some Oakley Metas,” she says.
She claims the reaction appeared exactly where the glasses sit.
“It burned everywhere that the glasses sit,” she says. “You can literally see the line where my glasses sit.”
Robin adds that it didn’t stop there. “It completely broke my face out,” she says, adding that it was “literally the only thing” she changed in her routine.
She also says the effects didn’t go away quickly. “This was close to two months ago, and these bruises and scars still have not gone away,” she says. “I have tried everything to get this stuff to clear up.”
Commenters Share Similar Concerns
In the comments, some viewers speculated about what might have caused the reaction.
“Those Meta glasses are basically a computer on your face and they can overheat just like our phones and devices,” one person wrote.
“Can we have a serious discussion for a second… if we’re not supposed to have our phone or Bluetooth devices close to our head, why are we wearing these glasses?” another said.
“Thank you for telling the truth. I got some as well and said the exact same thing… save your money,” a third added.
Could The Glasses Have Caused A Reaction?
Smart glasses are typically made from materials like nylon, polycarbonate, and other synthetics. While these are typically present in eyewear, some people can still experience irritation or allergic reactions depending on their skin sensitivity.
More broadly, research has looked at how wearable tech, including smart glasses, can affect users. According to Medical News Bulletin, extended use can contribute to digital eye strain, which may lead to dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches, and even neck and shoulder discomfort.
There are also concerns about blue light exposure, which can affect sleep patterns, as well as something called vergence-accommodation conflict, where the eyes struggle to focus between a display and its contents.
