Another of Vladimir Putin’s military generals has been killed in the ongoing war with Ukraine, it has been claimed. Lieutenant General Yakov Rezantsev, who was 48, was reportedly killed in a strike near the city of Kherson, the Ukranian defence ministry has said.
Rezantsev was the commander of the 49th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District. Russia has not confirmed the death, and has thus far the country has only officially announced the death of one general. But it is believed he is one of several Russian generals to have been killed since the conflict in Ukraine began last month.
It is unusual for senior army officials to be so close to the front line, but reports of unreliable equipment, together with low morale amongst soldiers, have reportedly forced the hands of more experienced and high-ranking members of the Russian army. General Rezantsev reportedly said, in the days before the invasion, that the operation carried out in Ukraine would only take a few hours. However, more than a month has now passed and Ukrainian soldiers continue to fight for their land and Russia continues to be condemned for its actions across the globe.
