There have been plenty of sitcoms during the Queen 's 70 years on the throne, ranging from Gavin & Stacey to a more recent show, Here We Go - read everything you need to know about the BBC One sitcom here. But one sitcom that delighted viewers was The Royle Family.
Following the lives of Manchester family, The Royles, the sitcom aired on BBC One from 1998 to 2000, with specials from 2006 to 2012. To help mark the Jubilee, and perhaps an upcoming very long weekend of relaxing, we have taken a look at where the cast of this iconic sitcom are now.
Ricky Tomlinson (James Randolph 'Jim' Royle)
Playing the grumpy, cynical, and selfish dad of the family was Ricky Tomlinson as Jim Royle. Known for his catchphrase "my arse!" Jim spent most of his days sitting and watching TV.
Since The Royle Family, Ricky has gone on to star in BBC series Nice Guy Eddie, the BBC drama Clocking Off, and, more recently, the LGBT short film, Tellin' Dad. Most recently, Ricky re-united with fellow The Royles co-star Ralf Little for a travel series, Ricky & Ralf's Very Northern Road Trip.
Sue Johnston (Barbara Royle)
In the role of the long-suffering wife of Jim, Barbara Royle was Sue Johnston. Barbara was very kind and had a lot of love and care for her family.
Sue went on to have a very successful career, playing Grace Foley in BBC drama, Walking the Dead, Gloria Price in ITV soap, Coronation Street, and Miss Denker in ITV drama, Downton Abbey. Recently, she has starred in the moving BBC drama, Time, and the Channel 4 short film, Help, as well as new Downton Abbey film, Downton Abbey: A New Era.
Caroline Aherne (Denise Best)
Caroline Aherne starred as Denise, the lazy daughter of Barbara and Jim. Denise has two children, who she rarely looks after, and is married to Dave. As well as starring in the show Caroline also co-wrote The Royle Family and narrated Channel 4 show Gogglebox until she died aged 52 in July, 2016, from lung cancer.
Ralf Little (Antony Royle)
Taking the role of Antony Royle, the son of Jim and Barbara, was Ralf Little. Antony was treated as a dogsbody by his family and often did a lot of the family chores.
After The Royle Family Ralf went on to star in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and he also had a semi-professional football career playing for Maidstone United, Edgware Town, and Chertsey Town. Most recently he has played the detective, Neville Parker, in BBC show, Death in Paradise.
Craig Cash (Dave Best)
Playing Denise's boyfriend, Dave Best was Craig Cash. Dave was cheeky and happy as he put up with Denise's selfish lifestyle. Alongside Caroline, Craig co-wrote The Royle Family and after Caroline's death he took over her role as narrator on Gogglebox. This is a role he still holds today and is very recognised for it.
Liz Smith (Nana)
In the role of Nana, was Liz Smith. Nana was a demanding elderly lady and she did not get on with Jim at all. Despite this, she constantly hints at wanting to move in with Jim and Barbara.
Before her death in 2016 Liz starred in TV drama, Lark Rise to Candleford, and continued to star in many other shows and films. These included Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Oliver Twist.
Jessica Hynes (Cheryl Carroll)
Best friends to Denise, Cheryl was played by Jessica Hynes. Throughout the series, Jessica tries to unsuccessfully diet and often looks after Denise's children.
Jessica was one of the creators of the sitcom, Spaced, and has starred in Doctor Who, the TV series, Twenty Twelve, and There She Goes. She has most recently starred in BBC drama, Life After Life.
Doreen Keogh (Mary Carroll)
The mum of Cheryl, Mary Carroll, was played by Doreen Keogh. The Irish character is shown as a gossip and a busybody. Doreen has also had a successful career on stage performing in The Three Sisters at Chichester Festival Theatre in 2001. In 2017, aged 93, Doreen passed away.
Peter Martin (Joe Carroll)
Much shyer than his wife Mary, Joe Carroll was played by Peter Martin. He is also a talented singer and becomes more sociable after having a few drinks. After The Royle Family Peter starred in the ITV soap, Emmerdale, from 2001 to 2007. He has also appeared on stage in a production of Dad's Army and most recently starred in the comedy film, Walk like a Panther.
Geoffrey Hughes (Twiggy)
Longtime family friend to the Royle family, Twiggy, played by Geoffrey Hughes, often has rip-off materials or stolen goods to sell on. He often ends up in prison and last appeared in the 2008 Christmas special. Since The Royle Family, Geoffrey has starred in ITV police drama Heartbeat as the show's main character. Geoffrey died in 2012 from prostate cancer.
