The Royal Family witnessed a historic moment today as The King was presented with the first banknotes featuring his image during an Audience with Andrew Bailey, Governor of The Bank of England, and Sarah John, Chief Cashier and Executive Director of Banking. This significant event marks a new chapter in the history of British currency.
The eagerly awaited banknotes are set to enter circulation on 5th June, creating a buzz among collectors and the general public alike. Notably, this marks the first instance of The Bank of England changing the image of The Monarch on a banknote. The tradition began back in 1960 when Queen Elizabeth II became the first Monarch to grace a Bank of England note.
