The RMT cannot be blamed for covid pandemic and its impact on public finances

It’s not the fault of railway staff that inflation is running at more than 10 per cent.

Trade union members are also not to blame for the damage done to the UK economy by Brexit.

The coronavirus pandemic and its impact on public finances cannot be laid at the door of the RMT.

But listening to the desperate performance by Tory transport secretary Grant Shapps yesterday, you’d think the country’s woes are caused by the actions of people simply trying to get a decent pay rise.

RMT members across the UK have walked out in a dispute over pay and staffing levels.

They’ve asked for a pay rise of seven per cent – which still amounts to a cut in real terms due to soaring inflation.

Network Rail – owned and controlled by the UK Government – has had its funding slashed at a time when passenger numbers have dropped due to repeated lockdowns.

The Conservatives now view this crisis as an excuse to force through changes to working conditions.

Right-wing Tories hate powerful trade unions and loathe workers who still have the capability to organise powerful strikes.

Their cheerleaders in the media are only too happy to wheel out tired old cliches about a return to the 70s.

But the brutal reality is the Conservatives have been in power at Westminster for 12 years.

They are the ones at fault for the UK’s dismal response to Covid.

It’s the Tories who forced through a chaotic Brexit deal.

It’s Downing Street which can’t control inflation.

Blame them. Not railway workers.

Saluting heroes

The Daily Record’s Pride of Scotland awards celebrate the achievements and dedication of ordinary Scots.

We are thrilled to honour those who have once again humbled our judges by their incredible acts of bravery, kindness and determination to help others.

These ordinary people show courage and fortitude on a daily basis, some facing challenges many could not imagine.

They meet life’s demands head on and make Scotland a better place to live in.

The recipients announced today all richly deserve recognition.

It is an honour to be able to tell their stories for our readers.

But no tributes can do justice to this everyday heroism that too often passes without notice.

Our awards are a nod of appreciation from a grateful nation.

The winners are an inspiration and are truly the Pride of Scotland.
