The reason everyone's talking about Bruno - Disney's latest release makes musical history

If you haven't heard of Disney's latest animation release Encanto - you must either living under a rock, or not living with a young child under your roof.

The film, which hit Disney + at the end of December, features a star-studded voice cast including Wilmer Valderrama (That 70's Show) John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge!), and Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) voicing the lead role of Mirabel.

Encanto's plot takes place in the mystical mountains of Colombia and follows 15-year-old Mirabel who is the only member of her family who has been born without magical powers.

However when her family begin to suddenly loose their special abilities, Mirabel goes on a mission to save Encanto, by using the power of being ordinary.

The film's Latino-inspired soundtrack was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the mastermind behind the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, and has completely taken over the lives of children and parents alike. But it's one song in particular which has become a worldwide ear-worm - and that's 'We Don't Talk About Bruno.'

Encanto's biggest hit is penned about the family's mysterious uncle Bruno, who has been shunned by the rest of the family for his scarily accurate visions into the future, and is the UK’s official #1 song right now and the first Disney song to ever reach the top spot.

In the States, it’s rising up the Hot 100 singles chart (current position: #2), while the Encanto soundtrack album has once again hit #1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

On Spotify, the song has been played over 82 million times and viewed over 133 million times on YouTube.

The song has also gone viral on TikTok, which has been credited to the reason for the hit's popularity, which has now surpassed the Frozen's Let It Go, which was released almost a decade ago.

This Morning presenters Phillip Schofield and Rochelle Humes sat down with Stephanie Beatriz on the show to discuss We Don't Talk About Bruno's success today, with the actress calling the song reaching #1 in the UK 'bananas'.

"The fact that We Don't Talk About Bruno is number one in the charts in the UK is bananas, it's bananas," she said. "But it's also a testament to Lin-Manuel Miranda's music, which is so infectious and so catchy.

"I think people are really falling in love with the movie on a different level."

The actress said that felt the film 'give people a peek into Latino culture and all the ways we can look at it' as well as a better understanding of Colombian music.

Rochelle also praised the film for it's broad representation of skin tones.

She said: "For my children it's very rare for them when a film comes on and there are lots of characters who look my children, or look like their auntie or their uncle and I really saw them engage in a different way, which was really special for me actually."
