Netflix is gearing up to launch a new erotic thriller that is sure to leave viewers hot under the collar. Hot on the heels of psychological drama You and the raunchy series Sex/Life, the streaming giant is dropping a brand-new tale of forbidden lust.
Written by playwright Morgan Lloyd-Malcolm, new miniseries Obsession follows respected London surgeon William as he embarks on an affair with his adult son’s fiancée Anna. Their dangerous liaisons soon develop into an erotic infatuation that threatens to change their lives forever, as William becomes obsessed with his soon-to-be daughter-in-law.
It stars a host of familiar faces, led by Spooks and The Hobbit star Richard Armitage and Peaky Blinders and Happy Valley’s Charlie Murphy as the two lustful lovers. They are joined by Obi-Wan Kenobi actress Indira Varma and Ms. Marvel’s Rish Shah as William’s wife Ingrid and his son Jay.

Obsession is a modern take on Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel Damage, which was also adapted into a 1992 film with Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche. But unlike the original, this tale is told from Anna’s female perspective, rather than that of the male.
In an interview with Stylist, Lloyd-Malcolm said: “I loved the book but it was written entirely from a man’s point of view. Anna is portrayed as a kind of vamp who comes into the family, blows everything up and then disappears.
“Her primary function is to serve the purpose of what the male lead needs. I said, ‘If I’m going to do this, I want to make sure I dig into Anna and why she behaves in the way she does.’
“I wanted to try and understand the characters in the story – and especially Anna – in a way that wasn’t just two-dimensional.”

Obsession promises plenty of nudity and some pretty explicit sex scenes. The show was pitched to Armitage “with a sense of trepidation” due to its explicit nature.
“It’s going to be a challenge, physically. It’s nudity parity,” he said. “That’s industry speak for full kit off for male and female actors.”
But working for the first time with an intimacy co-ordinator – who helps to choreograph sex scenes and put the actors at eash – helped things run smoothly. Writing in The Daily Telegraph, Armitage said: “Luckily, we had Adelaide Waldrop: part director, part psychologist, part choreographer.
“Her approach to the work completely changed my viewpoint.”
Since the first trailer for Obsession dropped, fans have been left eager to dive into the raunchy series. Taking to Twitter, @violetta_m_ said: “Hottest trailer ever counting the days to watch that.”
@nob_what added: “Holy God! This might be too raunchy to tell the mother about.”
@Bedollz added: “Richard Armitage in some kinky show. I’m seated!”
@RayOfPitchBlack simply said: “Oh my word, hello.”
Obsession is available to stream on Netflix from Thursday, April 13.
