The rarest and most common days to have a birthday on revealed

The rarest and most common days to have a birthday in the UK have been revealed in new data. September 27 is the day with the most birthdays, while fewest people in England and Wales are born on Boxing Day.

The numbers of births from 2001 and 2021 were analysed for the data that has been put together by the Office of National Statistics.

Boxing Day was the least common, with just 1,345 births recorded each year, while slightly more were delivered on Christmas Day (1,416) and New Year's Day (1.563).

Overall, the first four months of the year are less popular for birthdays in comparison to the period of June to October.

At the other end of the scale, September 27 was found to be the most common day to be born in England and Wales - averaging 1,193 births. September 24 took second place with 1,987 births followed by September 25 with 1,980.

Coming in joint fourth and fifth place were October 1 and September 23 (both 1,979).

Analysts claim one reason September birthdays are so common is because parents want children who are the oldest in their school year, while others say it could be down to the Christmas break and September being nine months later.

Here is the graph put together by the Office of National Statistics:

(ONS)

The ONS has previously stated births over holiday periods are least common because medical staff don't plan any births so it is only natural births that will happen on those days..

Not a holiday, but April Fool's Day, on April 1, just missed out on being named as one of the five least common birthdays (1,722).

The latest figures on from the ONS showed there were 624,828 live births in England and Wales in 2021, an increase of 1.8% from 613,936 in 2020, but still below the 2019 figure (640,370). They say that 2021 remains in line with the long-term trend of decreasing live births seen before the coronavirus pandemic.

They have also found that in 2020, the average age of mothers in England and Wales remained at 30.7 years, while the average age of fathers increased slightly to 33.7 years.
