The Queen loves a martini says Tom Hanks on The One Show

Emma Lewis and Jermaine Jenas had some very special guests in the studio this evening. Hollywood legend Tom Hanks and his new co-star Austin Butler spoke about their new movie Elvis.

Ahead of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations this week, Hanks discussed his meeting with the Queen. Speaking on The One Show he said: “I sat right next to the Queen of England at a dinner with the Obamas.

"The chit-chat with the Queen is something you have to get ready for. I knew I was going to be sitting next to her so I wanted to be able to talk about things that were important but not presumptuous. We spoke about how often she gets time off, et cetera"

“Out of nowhere, I noticed this gloved hand place a tumbler of clear liquid between me and Her Royal Majesty. But it wasn't in a water glass, so I dared to ask the Queen ‘what is Her Majesty's cocktail of choice?' and she said ‘ooh martini.’"

The actor, thinks the Queen's 'had a wonderful reign' and that he might drink a martini from now on to 'polish' his game. Hanks made his breakthrough in the 1980s with the movie Splash, he earned further acclaim for his hilarious and insightful acting in the movie Big and by the early 1990s, Hanks became one of the world's biggest actors. He remains a huge cultural force today and has expanded his range to produce a number of productions.

Hanks' accolade doesn't just finish at his movies, the 65-year-old is a descendant of King John of England, making him a distant cousin to the Queen. The special dinner with the Obamas is the only time Hanks has interacted with the Queen, as far as we're aware.

As well as hosting Hanks and Butler, the One Show also spoke live with the Springwatch team, Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan, ahead of their new series. The show also surprised the first Platinum Champion heading to the Big Jubilee Lunch this weekend.
