The prize pots on offer to Newcastle United if they qualify for Champions League or Europa League

Newcastle United still have it all to play for in the remaining 15 Premier League fixtures of the season - despite the disappointment of not ending their trophy drought at Wembley at the weekend.

Winning the Carabao Cup would have shaken off the tag of bringing no silverware to the city since 1969 but in monetary terms in would have landed just £100,000. The Magpies still secured a cheque for £50,000 at Wembley despite losing 2-0 to Manchester United on cup final day.

Looking back at the finances from their Carabao Cup campaign the Magpies earned £7,000 from the prize pot for beating Tranmere Rovers, while the third round victory over Crystal Palace on penalties banked another £10,000.

Seeing off Bournemouth in the last 16 banked £15,000 while the quarter-final victory over Leicester City earned £25,000. The two-legged semi-final victory over Southampton earned another £25,000

Those fees are a drop in the ocean compared to what Newcastle are playing for now though. Regardless of not getting the joy of lifting the cup, the money men at St James' Park will be smiling if Eddie Howe's team make the top four.

Qualifying for the Champions League competition for the first time since 2003 would help ease the pain of losing to Man United, but is also worth significantly more to Newcastle as a club. Indeed, reaching the group stages alone of next season's Champions League picks up a chunky fee with this year's qualifiers netting £13.48m each.

After that, each group win is worth £2.4m while a draw nets £802,000 per team. Reaching the last 16 from the groups is worth £8.2m with progression to the quarter-finals gets £9.1m and advancing to the semi-finals would mean a cheque for £10.7m.

Reaching the final is worth £13.3m with another £3.8m in the bank for winning it. Finishing fifth for Newcastle would mean a drop in earnings.

Last season Eintracht Frankfurt pocketed £7.8million for reaching and beating Rangers in the final. The Glasgow club earned £4.2m for being runners-up.

Reaching the group stages of the Europa League is worth £3.3m Group stages wins was worth £572,000 and draws net £191,000. Winning your Europa League group is worth £994,000 and being runners-up gets a prize of £500,000.

Any clubs reaching the last 16, based on last year's fees, picked up £1.1m while quarter-finalists got £1.6m and semi-finalists got £2.5m. The Europa Conference League is the lowest Continental competition Newcastle could end up in.

The Conference League places are handed to those finishing outside the top five and potentially depend on what the top four clubs do in the Champions League. The eventual winners net £4,400,000 while simply qualifying for the group stages banks £2.6m. Victories in the groups are worth £440,000 and a draw is worth £146,00. Further funding is on offer to clubs that progress through the knockout stages.
