A Yorkshire town just an hour’s drive away from Greater Manchester has been named the best value staycation destination by Sykes Holiday Cottages for 2023. Holmfirth in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, topped the list with an average weekly holiday rental price of £454.
The list was published as part of The Sykes Staycation Index 2023, which features analysis on the current staycation sector. The list of best value holiday destinations looked at the average weekly holiday rental price, with all the destinations in the top ten coming in at under £550.

The other destinations in the top ten were all located in the north of England, they are: Haworth, Yorkshire; Penrith, Cumbria; Cockermouth, Cumbria; Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire; Barnard Castle, Durham; Hornsea, Yorkshire; and Matlock, Derbyshire.

Sykes Holiday Cottages found that 50 per cent of holidaymakers were more likely to book a staycation over a holiday abroad due to the rising cost of living. It revealed that 78 per cent of all property searches on its website in the last 12 months were sorted by ‘lowest price first’, as Brits look to keep costs down.
Nestled in the eastern slopes of the Pennine Hills in the Holme Valley, Holmfirth is a vibrant town with a range of pubs, cafes and bars - and its own vineyard - so visitors can imagine they’re in France or Italy on a sunny summer’s day. The town is probably best known as the filming location for the long-running comedy Last of the Summer Wine, making it a popular destination with fans of the show.
There are miles of stunning countryside to explore on its doorstep, including the Peak District which is just two miles away. Holmfirth was even named by The Sunday Times as one of the best places to live in 2023, describing it as “one of the coolest locations to live near Huddersfield and Manchester”.
