'The player knows' - Liverpool VAR decisions slammed after Fabinho and Ibrahima Konate tackles

Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray believes Liverpool should have had a player sent off in their FA Cup tie on Sunday.

The Reds were beaten 2-1 by Brighton in their fourth round tie on Sunday. Harvey Elliott had put Liverpool in front, but goals from Lewis Dunk Kaoru Mitoma knocked the visitors out of the cup at the Amex Stadium.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have now been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions after lifting each of the two trophies last term. Now Liverpool will hope that the Champions and Premier League provide them success.

The tie against Brighton saw two rather controversial incidents. The main one came from a challenge from Fabinho.

The Brazilian, who only entered the match as a substitute for the final five minutes, tackled Brighton striker Evan Ferguson. The challenge was checked by VAR and only a yellow was awarded, but Murray reckons that Fabinho should have been given his marching orders.

"I can't understand how the VAR, Neil Swarbrick, can't see that as a red card,” Murray told ITV Sport. “The player knows it, so how do they not see it?"

Murray went on to give his view on another incident involving Ibrahima Konate. In the second half, the Liverpool centre-back was involved in defending a counter-attack and challenged Alexis Mac Allister just outside the penalty area.

VAR could not award a penalty, and felt no red card was needed. Murray felt that a foul should have been awarded, and called for a change to the way VAR is used.

"I think it is a foul,” said Murray. “It boils down to how we use the VAR and it is a match-changing moment, and in my eyes, it needs to be reviewed."
