According to People Magazine , in May 2019, a one-year-old Louis joined his siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, in a picture at Catherine’s Back to Nature garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The photographs quickly travelled around the world.
Although the purpose of the garden was to raise awareness for the benefits of the natural world for children, Louis’s solo moments, toddling through the woodland setting, attracted considerable media attention.
The photos contributed to a more informal public image of the family. They felt less formal than traditional royal portraits; they showed a toddler just doing what a toddler does.
A garden built around childhood
Andrée Davies and Adam White, the designers, created the Back to Nature garden, in cooperation with the Princess of Wales, as more than just a show garden. The garden featured a rope swing, a tree house, a stream, and a woodland trail designed to show how beneficial outdoor activities are for children.
According to Kensington Palace, the project was inspired by the Princess’s history of advocacy for early childhood development and mental well-being. In her statement about the garden, she said that she wanted to emphasize the importance of nature on child development, emotional well-being, and the learning processes involved.
The photographs appeared to reflect those goals; George, Charlotte, and Louis weren't just observing the garden, they were actively participating.
Why did those photos capture attention?
The response can, partly, be attributed to what the developmental sciences tell us about early childhood development.
Children need interaction with the world around them as well as a caregiver with whom they can establish responsive interactions. Children develop by investigating the world through their own observations. The research into the first few years of a child’s development states that the experience of everyday interactions is important for their emotional and cognitive growth.
Similar research from the World Health Organization emphasises the importance of caregivers and opportunities for exploration during early childhood. The WHO states that child development happens best when their needs are attended to and when they have the space and freedom to engage in play and discovery.
Viewed through this lens, the images showed behaviors commonly associated with early childhood exploration and play.
The appeal of an unfiltered royal child
Prince Louis's interactions have continued to captivate many even years later. From making funny faces on the balcony at Buckingham Palace to animated responses during state events, Louis's most engaging appearances seem to be ones that are unrehearsed.
Childhood playfulness has often been attributed to being spontaneous, adaptable, and flexible. These traits will allow them to adapt and interact more with the world around them. One possible explanation is that many of the moments that attract attention involve behaviors familiar to parents and families. The people who are observing the child seem to relate to behaviors that are characteristic of children's everyday lives.
More than a charming family moment
What the pictures at Chelsea Flower Show seem to reflect is much more than a lovely family photo opportunity. They align with the work that the Princess of Wales has been undertaking relating to early childhood development.
The Princess has spent years speaking about the importance of nurturing surroundings, nurturing relationships, and giving children opportunities to develop their sense of self through play. Research conducted at the Child Development Perspectives that focused on responsive caregiving concluded that having warm and responsive caregivers helps children develop a sense of confidence and security. The continued popularity of the photographs suggests that the message resonated with many people.
In a family known for their ceremony, these photographs showed a side of family life that many people found relatable - childhood in action. Perhaps this is the reason for the enduring popularity of this one picture: the fact that the photo was designed to showcase the garden but provided a glimpse of childhood.
