The people who want to represent Abercynon on Rhondda Cynon Taf Council

The candidates for the Abercynon by-election on Rhondda Cynon Taf Council have been revealed. The by-election for the Abercynon ward is being held on Thursday, November 17 after Marcia Rees-Jones who won a seat there for Labour in May decided to stand down.

The candidates include Jeffrey Lee Baxter of the Green Party, Andrew James Dennis of Labour, Adam Robinson of the Conservatives and Matt Skinner of Plaid Cymru. Jeffrey Lee Baxter, the Green Party candidate said: “My name is Jeff Baxter and I am the Green Party candidate for the Abercynon by-election for RCT County Borough Council.

“I am standing for the Green Party because even the massive and destructive floods in RCT in February 2020 were not enough to wake other political parties up from their complacent approach to climate change. As an active community organiser I have founded two community organisations as well as a business in Rhondda Cynon Taf as well volunteering for a range of local organisations.

“I live in the RCT area with my partner and our young daughter. If elected I will campaign for total divestment of RCT CBC pension funds invested in destructive fossil fuel industries, consistently argue for a genuine Climate Emergency policy at every level of government, press for a meaningful active travel strategy for RCT combined with an effective, integrated and properly resourced transport service and campaign for proper consultation from RCT County Borough Council ensuring that local people are actually involved in decisions and developments that impact on the future of Abercynon and RCT.”

Andrew James Dennis, who is standing for Labour, said: “I have lived in Abercynon for just over a year having bought my first house in the ward. I was attracted to the area due to the excellent transport connections and the stunning natural landscape. I work as a part-qualified accountant in Cardiff and graduated from the University of York in 2017.

“I have had a long standing interest in politics having joined the Labour party 11 years ago. When the opportunity to represent the ward that I live in alongside Rhys Lewis came up I decided to put myself forward as the Labour candidate.

"The local Labour party has been making good progress on the manifesto it was elected on in May’s elections and it would be an honour to help deliver the remaining commitments. As a local councillor I will look forward to the opportunity to help improve the ward through campaigning to redevelop derelict land, tackling littering and working alongside our current councillor Rhys Lewis.”
