The people behind Altrincham Market and Mackie Mayor have bought a pub in Cheshire

The folks behind the Altrincham Market and Mackie Mayor foodhalls have bought a pub in Cheshire. They will be taking over The Nags Head in Haughton, just outside Tarporley.

They’re joining up with Tender Cow, one of the operators at Altrincham Market, Mackie Mayor and the Picturedrome in Macclesfield on the venture, along with Honest Crust and Little Window, and Picos Tacos.

What’s more, Tender Cow will actually be rearing and butchering its own animals for the menu, in an effort to maintain maximum sustainability. They’ll also be using local suppliers such as Littlewoods Butchers, and the Cinderwood Market Garden in nearby Nantwich.

The Nags Head announced its closure on New Year’s Eve in December 2019. The Grade II listed building dates back to 1680, and sits in grounds with a bowling green and country walks all around.

Following its closure, it was threatened with being developed into two dwellings with five additional houses being built in the grounds.

In a post to its Instagram page, Tender Cow said: “It’s rather simple really; focusing on really great British pub food by building on our relationships with current suppliers, rearing our own animals, incorporating whole animal butchery and celebrating our own charcuterie.

“With this we’ll be making a massive step in the direction of everything we all want to be. Sustainable, local & honest.”

The new venture is also calling out for new staff. They added: “The kitchen will be headed up by Alex who’s been running our kitchen in Macclesfield and at the forefront of moving us along as a business.

“Alex is incredibly hard working, talented, creative, humble, modest and an absolute joy to work with. Alex needs a whole host of chefs to join him from his sous chef to his commis to a part time butcher.”

Since it opened in 2014, Altrincham Market has transformed the centre of Altrincham into a destination for eating and drinking, with spin-off markets and a host of other operators heading to the town, from the likes of Sugo and Blanchflower to tapas restaurant Porta.

It then opened Mackie Mayor on Swan Street in 2017, and the Picturedrome in Macclesfield in 2019.
