The part James Corden played in Frank Lampard Chelsea return amid Todd Boehly question

Frank Lampard oversaw an underwhelming display upon his return to Chelsea as the Blues were beaten 1-0 by Wolves on Saturday.

Matheus Nunes' stunning effort proved to be the difference between the two teams in a game which saw the visitors muster just one solitary shot on target.

The latest loss in a truly abysmal campaign sees Lampard's side sitting 11th in the Premier League table, with the prospect of a campaign without European football appearing extremely likely next season.

Having previously been sacked two years ago with the club in ninth, Lampard acknowledged the difficulty of the task ahead of him, admitting post-match: "I think it's a big task. You're managing Chelsea Football Club. We know we're not in a position we want to be in."

Whilst there was a mass clamour from supporters to see Graham Potter dismissed, Lampard's return to the Stamford Bridge dugout on an interim basis last week came as, somewhat, of a shock to the footballing world.

The 44-year-old was sacked by Everton in February, leaving the Merseyside club second-from-bottom. However, new information regarding his Chelsea return has come to light and reports suggest that Blues owner Todd Boehly, intriguingly, sought advice from a high-profile British celebrity.

The Sun claim that TV star James Corden, a fan of Lampard's former side West Ham United, was consulted by Boehly prior to the reappointment.

Having hosted The Late Late Show with James Corden between 2015 and 2023, the Gavin and Stacey creator is thought to have grown close with Boehly during his time in the United States and gave the go-ahead for Lampard to complete an incredible return.

He was also spotted in the Stamford Bridge Executive Box during Chelsea's Premier League win over Wolves in October.

Corden and Lampard, meanwhile, are friends, with the pair having starred on A League of Their Own together where the ex-England midfielder’s cousin Jamie Redknapp is a team captain.

Chelsea now face the daunting prospect of a UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.
