The One Show viewers brand Jamie Oliver 'patronising' after cooking 'cheap' meal

Jamie Oliver has been branded 'patronising' by The One Show viewers after he cooked a "cheap" meal on the show.

The celebrity chef cooked up a sausage and minestrone soup on the BBC show on Thursday night and claimed the meal would cost £1.45 per portion to make. However viewers have said the meal, which included Cumberland sausage, red wine, parmesan cheese, garlic, fennel seeds and fresh lasagne sheets would actually cost much more, Birmingham Live reports.

He was on the show promoting his new book 'One' which features 'simple one-pan wonders' and included the recipe he cooked up on air. Jamie told viewers: "In this book, I've used supermarket ingredients...never more than eight ingredients and for now when people are talking about cost of living and stuff like that, most of the recipes are in pans on hobs.

"So a hob is about four times cheaper than an oven. 10 minutes of cooking that's about 10p, actually slightly less, in energy. And this dish with no tweaks is £1.45 per portion."

Viewers slammed the 'millionaire' chef and took to Twitter as they claimed the dish would actually be far more expensive to cook. @iainm68 said: "£1.45 a portion? Do you know how much parmesan cheese is!!#TheOneShow"

Without realising no one is going to want to spend money on a bloody recipe book #TheOneShow."

@dcm_illness added: "Book costs £20 to show you how to make a £1 dinner. What's the point eh when you're in a food Bank eh? Fresh veg and fruit non existent. Now red wine? I ain't got red pop!! #TheOneShow."
