The One Show cancelled by BBC as Alex Jones announces when it will return

The One Show is being pulled off air by the BBC, with Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas confirming that Wednesday's episode was the last for a month.

After just three episodes this week, the presenting duo broke the sad news to loyal viewers that the July 27 instalment would be the last for some time, as the BBC prioritise their 'summer of sport,' which will get going when the Commonwealth Games kicks off on Thursday.

Alex and former Newcastle and Spurs player Jermaine were joined live from Birmingham by Lenny Henry and Tom Daley as the city prepares to host the world famous sporting event, which will see athletes compete in disciplines from swimming to gymnastics and athletics to cycling.

As the show wrapped up, Alex said The One Show was taking a "summer break," until August 22, as she urged viewers to "stay safe and have a great summer." A video of Wednesday night's closing moments was shared on the programme's official Twitter page, with one fan commenting underneath to wish Alex and Jermaine writing: "Have a great holiday guys."

News of The One Show's extended break comes after Alex admitted on social media that she and her family were going through a 'tricky' time. Taking to Instagram, she wrote: "Things have been a bit tricky for us recently and in all honesty, I haven’t had time to be on here between working and the children but I randomly logged on and saw all your lovely messages gently asking if we were all ok.

She added: "I was touched by your kindness and so I just wanted to check in and say thank you, and that even though life has been a bit challenging, we are ok and still managing to enjoy the beginning of the holidays and there’s still plenty to smile about! (I’ll pop some stuff on my stories)."
