As the end of the season gets closer, so does the opening of the summer transfer window and many rumours of potential incomings and outgoings have already begun.
Tottenham firstly need to focus on finishing the season in the strongest position possible, before Antonio Conte can think about the changes he needs to make to his current squad. Earning a Champions League spot for next season will make Fabio Paratici's job slightly easier, as the club will have more attraction for potential incomings but after the 3-2 defeat to Man United on Saturday, that hope is slipping away.
As well as new players Tottenham need to bring in, some of the current players may make an exit, which could be best for both the club and their own careers. During the summer last year, Harry Kane had to deal with England's defeat in the Euros final and then his summer saga involving his potential move to Man City.
The deal never became a reality and the 28-year-old remained in north London, starting the season under Nuno Espirito Santo. After a slow start, Kane has now found his form again, scoring 21 goals in 39 appearances so far and breaking the Premier League goal scoring record with Son Heung-min for the most combination goals.
The England captain seems to have found some new energy since the arrival of Conte and has been making the required impact in the final third, as well dropping deep to help his side with creativity.
In an exclusive interview with football.london, Dimitar Berbatov gave his verdict on Kane.
"I’m so happy for Harry Kane after the transfer rumours, saga, show, TV soap opera and everything," the former Tottenham striker and Betfair ambassador said. "I am happy that he finds his form, scores goals, he reminds once again why he's one of the best in his position in the world.
"Not only scoring goals, just the way he’s playing the game, how he holds the ball, the calmness, the precision of the passing and then the finishing as well. So for me, he's one of the best in the world."
The 41-year-old scored more than 40 goals for the Lilywhites, in more than 100 appearances, during his two-year spell at the club. The Bulgarian then moved to Man United, where he found further success and football.london asked Berbatov what he would do if he was Kane, given the success he continued to find when he made the move away from the north London club.
"I believe that come the transfer window in the summer, we will be witnessing the same soap opera like we saw last time around with him [Kane]," the former striker admitted. "Especially if he continues that way of scoring goals and that performance against [Man] City, against Everton. He proved he’s one of the best in the world in his position.
"When the moment comes in the summer and again some team is probably come for him, we're going to start to question him and talking about what he should do. That's a very tough position to be in. I've been there. It's exhausting. It plays on your mind all the time. You get angry, you get disappointed."
Kane has been at the club for just under 20 years, starting his Tottenham career as a child and he has become such a key player for Spurs.
Ahead of Tottenham's defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday, Roy Keane admitted that he believed both Kane and Son would "walk into this Manchester United team".
Conte has previously made his views clear about the 28-year-old's part in his Spurs squad and is never short of praise for him.
"I knew the situation in the summer and, when Harry decided to stay in Tottenham, I found a player totally involved in this project...if we want to think to build something to win, Harry must be a starting point," the 52-year-old previously admitted.
Therefore it is likely that the Lilywhites and Conte will work hard to keep Kane in N17 this summer, but it is likely to also depend on what he wants to look back on when his career comes to an end, which Berbatov explained.
"I have difficulty answering what he's going to do and what he should do," the 41-year-old said. "Some players just enjoy playing football and scoring goals. It doesn't matter if they win the title, like Harry Kane is doing at the moment, scoring goals, enjoying, I bet he was the happiest after the City game, with the goals, with the performance and everything.
"At the end of a career some players just don’t care if they didn’t win a title. They knew they were great players and everybody loved him and that’s enough for them.
"Other players, when they look back, they need to see that they won a trophy or something like this. Who and what's he going to choose? We wait," Berbatov added.
There is nothing anyone can do until the summer transfer window and for now, fans will hope that Kane can continue his impact in the final fixtures of the season.
When the window does open, it will be a waiting game to see what the England captain decides, but there will be a lot of fingers crossed that he will still be wearing a Spurs shirt when the 2022/23 season commences.
