The one Edinburgh neighbourhood almost Covid free as cases stay high elsewhere

An Edinburgh neighbourhood has reported it is almost free of coronavirus cases as rates in the capital gradually begin to drop.

Colinton and Kingsknowe is the only area in the city reporting the second category of infection from Public Health Scotland, with just 50-99 cases per 100,000 people.

With restrictions in Scotland now fully lifted, the Edinburgh neighbourhood reported just three cases over a seven day period from April 24 to April 30.

Given a case rate of 66.2, the area is currently the lowest in the City of Edinburgh, with everywhere else reporting a rate of at least over 100 per 100,000 people.

The most recent data from Public Health Scotland ranks Liberton West and Braid Hills as experiencing the highest infection rates at the moment, with a rate of 549.3 per 100,000 of population.

Closely behind Liberton falls neighbouring Northfield and Piershill, with an infection rate of 542.4 per 100,000.

However, no area of Edinburgh is currently reporting the highest levels of infection, 800+ per 100,000, which almost all were just a few months ago.

On May 1, Scotland also saw a new set of rules introduced regarding self-isolation, and the legal requirements surrounding a positive Covid case.

Health Secretary Humza Yousaf has said that Scotland is now in a "different phase of the pandemic" and is "focused on reducing severe harm of the virus" meaning it is being treated like any other illness.
