The Odyssey film reel is 11 miles long and weighs more than a grizzly bear

Benny Safdie as Agamemnon and Matt Damon as Odysseys in The Odyssey.

Christopher Nolan's fantasy epic The Odyssey is a big film, but a photo shared by an IMAX projectionist truly shows just how big.

A projectionist at an IMAX theater posted an image of the film reel for The Odyssey looks like after its loaded into the console, explaining that it contains over 250,000 frames... which comes out to 11 miles long and 630 lbs in weight. For comparison, the average theatrical film reel is somewhere around 16,000 frames. The Odyssey, however, is far from the average film as it's nearly three hours in length (which is quite typical for a Christopher Nolan film, if you ask me). You can check out the image below.

Nolan also told Jimmy Fallon that the IMAX prints for The Odyssey were almost confiscated by airport customs agents in Scotland. "They opened all the canisters," Nolan said. Thankfully, nothing was damaged.

The film is an adaptation of Homer's famous epic poem. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, King of Ithaca, who is just trying to get home after the Trojan War. Unfortunately, it isn't that simple, and the people he loves back home are wondering whether or not it's time to move on. Various suitors are competing for the hand of his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway), though his son Telemachus (Tom Holland) hopes depe down that Odysseus is still alive.

The Odyssey is in theaters now. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the upcoming movies in 2026 and beyond, or, check out our list of movie release dates.
