The occupation that faces the highest risk of death from radiation cancer revealed

  • Flight attendants and pilots face the highest risk of dying from radiation-related cancer of any occupation , according to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine .
  • In the study, researchers analysed death certificate data from nearly 13 million people across 503 occupations between 2020 and 2024.
  • According to researchers, almost seven per cent of deaths among flight attendants and pilots were from radiation-related cancers, higher than any of the other professions, including nuclear technologists.
  • US aircrew face an estimated 3 to 6 millisieverts per year of cosmic radiation on average.
  • Harvard Medical School researchers call for occupational radiation protections for aircrew members that align with their exposure levels.
