Here is The Nottinghamian from Wednesday, December 14:

Hello,

Today's edition of the Nottinghamian takes a look at a key changes in a redevelopment plan for an area of the city. After four commercial buildings were demolished for the development, plans have now changed after concerns were raised.

We will also see how a Sherwood business is coping after a car damaged their shop as well as detail support to families in Nottingham over the Christmas break. Plus we hear Nottingham's thoughts on planned council tax rises for residents.

Postponed

A 22-storey residential tower, as well as a nine storey apartment building and 12-storey student building, were all originally part of a plan for the junction of Queens Road and London Road, Nottingham (Nottingham Post)

A 22-storey tower has been postponed at a redevelopment on an 'ever-changing' side of Nottingham. The residential tower, as well as a nine-storey apartment building and 12-storey student building, were part of a plan for the junction of Queens Road and London Road.

But when the scheme was heard by Nottingham City Council's planning committee on October 19, it was deferred due to concerns over how the scale and architecture of the tallest structure would impact Nottingham's skyline. Significant revisions have now been made by applicant Lichfields, with the large London Road tower and the Queens Road apartment building now omitted from the plan.

The application now only addresses the proposed student building, which would form the first phase of the redevelopment, with a new application detailing the residential phase two of the plan to be submitted in early 2023.

The site was previously occupied by United Carpets, used car sellers NottinghamCar.com and Magpie Security Ltd. All of these companies were forced to relocate before the demolition of the four commercial units. Officers have advised councillors to give the greenlight to the revised phase one plan at Nottingham City Council's planning committee on December 21. Read more here.

'Gutted'

Owners of Rustic Vapez, Stuart Cobb and Douglas Eccles, beside the damage (Nottingham Post/ Joel Moore)

The owner of a vape store says he is 'gutted' he won't be able to reopen until the New Year after a car crashed into his shop. In October, a white Volkswagen smashed through the front of Rustic Vapez in Mansfield Road, Sherwood.

At the time, Douglas Eccles, 41, owner of Rustic Vapez, said the incident could have been 'very nasty' as it came less than half an hour after the business closed for the day. Two months on and now Douglas is still unable to serve customers amid issues with insurance and the front of the store still boarded up.

He said: "I'm proper gutted that I'm not able to reopen yet because now I'm going to lose the customers. Have they found somewhere else they can get their bits from and they're not going to be able to come back? I don't know none of this yet." Douglas is planning a 'grand opening' for when he can welcome customers again.

Trivia question: How many ancient oak trees are in Sherwood Forest?

The answer to today's trivia question is at the bottom of the newsletter.

Notts says

We hear your thoughts on the hot topic of the day (Lisa Walsh)

With yesterday's news of planned council tax rises for Nottingham city residents, we asked: "What do you make of the council tax hike for those living in Nottingham?"

Vicky Brown, 57, from Aspley, said: "I think it's wrong. We already have one of the highest council taxes in the country and now its going up again? It just isn't fair on the residents. Not with everything else going up too."

Carl Jenkins, 62, from Mapperley, added: "I do understand why the council would need more money, especially after Covid. If we can help out in any way we can then I don't mind it going up."

Si Adams, 49, from Bilborough, said: "It is just the wrong timing for so many people. We have rising bills all over the place. This is just yet another one. I don't think we should be paying as much as we do here in Nottingham, we don't have the best public services. I think the council could do a lot more with the money we pay them already."

Christmas support

Nottingham children who receive free school meals will get a £15-a-week voucher and free activities over the Christmas break (Joseph Raynor/ Nottingham Post)

Families in Nottingham are set to receive food vouchers and free activites over Christmas. It comes as Nottingham City Council aims to support struggling families during the festive period.

£15-a-week vouchers will be given to all pupils who receive free school meals (FSM) during the half-term. They will be issued to parents ahead of their children breaking up from school.

There will also be a number of outdoor holiday activities across Nottingham. At these, FSM pupils will receive a free lunch, plus a programme of activities focused on healthy eating, fitness and mental health. Parents and carers can book places by visiting www.asklion.co.uk/funandfood to see the list of clubs and the contact details of the groups. Read more here.
