Here is today's edition of The Nottinghamian:

Hello,

On this wet and grey day, The Nottinghamian brings reaction to Liz Truss' resignation as Prime Minister. We hear from Nottinghamshire MPs across the political divide.

We also take a look at the flooding caused by the heavy rainfall throughout the day and at how Rock City is bidding to be crowned the music venue of the year. Plus we see the work underway for Nottingham's Winter Wonderland and the best street style.

Resignation

This afternoon brought the news that Prime Minister Liz Truss has decided to resign following a 44-day tenue. It means she has become the shortest serving Prime Minister in history after she battled an open revolt from Conservatives demanding her departure.

In Nottingham, MPs across the political divide have been reacting to the news. Labour MP for Nottingham North, Alex Norris, has called for a general election. He said: "Liz Truss' legacy will be increased mortgage bills for Nottingham people. We don't need yet another Conservative Prime Minister - we need an election and a new government."

Labour Nottingham East MP, Nadia Whittome, echoes the calls for a general election. She said: "Liz Truss might be gone but the economic chaos that she and her party created continues, and people in Nottingham are suffering as a result. We’re meant to live in a democracy: we cannot have yet another unelected Tory Prime Minister imposed on the country."

Conservative MP for Bassetlaw, Brendan Clarke-Smith said he believes only Boris Johnson can revive the Conservative party and win an election again. Speaking to Sky News, he said: "I think she’s a decent person who wanted to deliver for this country and have the chance to do that. I think it’s a shame she hasn’t been able to in the end." Flooding

Flooding on Chestnut Grove, Burton Joyce (Marie Wilson)

A day of heavy downpours has left one Nottinghamshire village hit by flood water. Roads and shops in Burton Joyce have been closed following the heavy rain fall seen today.

The Co-op has shut after being flooded. A section of the car park and inside the store were affected by the flood water. Staff were seen walking barefoot inside the store. Retired Chris Staton left the Co-op store disappointed and shocked as he could not grab his paper this morning. The 79-year-old said: “I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. It’s the first time it has happened on this level.

Barry Giles of Burton Joyce, said: “I have not seen anything like this before. It’s been flooded before but not this badly.” Part of Chestnut Grove from Main Street to the A612 was also closed due to flood water on the road. In Mansfield, Jubilee Way North was shut due to flooding in the area.

Work underway

Work has already started ahead of the Nottingham Christmas Market (Marie Wilson)

Work on Nottingham's huge Christmas Winter Wonderland is underway and, judging by the plans, this year's season of festive joy is set to be bigger and better than ever before. With Nottingham's annual Bonfire Night cancelled, thoughts are already turning to Christmas.

The construction of this year's Winter Wonderland is expected to take around a month, with the opening date set for November 15. This year's Winter Wonderland will include new attractions such as the Sky Skate ice path. Old Market Square is now covered in huge scaffolding as the city gets itself ready for a host of jolly celebrations. Take a further look here.

Venue of the year

The legendary Rock City and the Royal Albert Hall are poles apart but they're both contenders for Venue of the Year in the first ever LIVE awards, in an effort to celebrate the endurance of the UK’s live music sector. The club in Talbot Street is facing stiff competition from other top London venues including the O2 Arena, Alexandra Palace and the London Palladium as well as The Leadmill in Sheffield.

Looking for evidence of innovation, the award submission detailed how the team at Rock City kept the flame burning throughout the challenges of the last year. Anton Lockwood, Head of Live, DHP Family, said: “Throughout the Covid period we creatively kept as many people as possible busy and in paid work – turning the car park for tour buses into an outdoor bar, while the dancefloor became a sit down club."

He added: “Now back up to speed we’ve continued to provide the best venue in the country, holding up the spirit of creativity and independence in the music industry, with no corporate sponsors telling us what to do, and an artist and audience-focussed attitude.” Judged by a panel of industry professionals, the awards will be presented in front of an invited industry audience, with hundreds expected to attend the ceremony in London on December 13.
