Here is today's edition of The Nottinghamian:

Hello,

Today's edition of the Nottinghamian focuses on a couple who won £1 million on the lottery and did something a little out of the ordinary.

We will also discuss a BBC Nottingham broadcaster blending his love of vinyl and pubs and take a look at all the events happening to mark Oktoberfest. Plus we have today's street style which reflects a change in weather.

Giving back

Andy and Paula Hancock with their mobile fish and chip shop (National Lottery)

A couple who won £1 million on a lottery scratchcard have used some of their winnings to set up a mobile fish and chip shop. Andy and Paula Hancock from Boughton will travel around rural communities in north Nottinghamshire serving food like cod, haddock, squid and oysters.

The couple, who won big in 2019 after buying a National Lottery scratchcard, launched their new venture by giving away free fish and chips at Broadleaves Care Home. In a "soft launch" of Loxley Catering during the summer, Mrs Hancock said the business had seen people queuing around corners for the food.

Mr Hancock said the couple had been "itching to get back" into the catering industry after selling their former business following the lottery win. He said: “Having lived in the same rural area all my life I have seen many local independent businesses like shops and pubs close. It’s not just a loss of business and jobs but there’s also an effect upon the community - a loss of a meeting place. I hope this business will serve up more than just food and be a regular focal point for people.”

Weather and trivia

Weather: Cloud thickening through the morning on Friday with long periods of occasionally heavy rain and strong winds. Rain clearing during the evening leaving a mostly dry night. Maximum temperature 14 °C.

Street style

Hannah chose her outfit to keep warm (Nottingham Post)

Fashion student Hannah McCafferty describes her style as "grungy but classy". The 20-year-old from Stoke on Trent said the inspiration behind her outfit choice today was because she "was cold this morning". Hannah gets her style inspiration from Instagram and Fashion Weeks in Milan, New York and Paris. Her style advice is: "Wear whatever you want because it could become a trend." Hannah prefers to shop online rather than in stores and gets most of her outfits from ASOS.

Outfit breakdown:

  • Hoodie - ASOS
  • Jacket - Depop
  • Trousers - ASOS
  • Shoes - Dr Martens
  • Bag - Rough Trade

Record club

Fancy listening to records whilst sipping a pint? Well, BBC broadcaster John Holmes has teamed up with Castle Rock Brewery to blend the love of vinyl and pubs. The pair have created a monthly record club, A Pint and A Half of Vinyl. Similar to a book club, people can meet up and bring their own vinyl to share stories and have a listen, as well as having a pint or two.

John said: “Teaming up with Castle Rock Brewery for the record club is a perfect match as both music and pubs bring people together. The brewery’s support of the research into how pubs can tackle loneliness highlights yet again that our communities need spaces to connect and opportunities to socialise. I hope the record club connects people of all musical tastes and all generations."

The record club launches on Wednesday October 5 at 7.30pm at Barley Twist in Carrington Street, the latest addition to Castle Rock Brewery’s 16-strong pub estate. Each month, working through the alphabet, John will bring his favourite records of that letter accompanied by his lifetime of showbiz stories - and invites anyone interested to take along their favourite albums too. Oktoberfest celebrations

Bierkeller in Friar Lane, are one of the many venues hosting events for Oktoberfest (Nottingham Post)

Nottingham is welcoming October with a range of food and drink venues celebrating all things German. In recent years, the celebrations have become popular in Nottingham with a number of bars and restaurants taking part. Some of the traditional foods on offer during October include pretzels, bratwurst and currywurst.

All the tasty treats get washed down with generous helpings of beer. If you fancy joining the festivities, then Caroline Barry has created a guide to the very best in German-inspired Oktoberfest events across the city centre. It includes pop-up pub kitchens by Annie's Burger Shack, fancy dress at Bierkeller and the tastes of Munich at The Garage. Find out more here.
