The Nottinghamian: Happy Nottinghamshire Day everyone

Stay up to date with all the latest stories across Nottinghamshire in the daily Nottinghamian newsletter. You can receive the newsletter straight to your inbox every weekday by signing up right here.

Here is today's edition of The Nottinghamian:

Hello,

Today is the day to feel proud of living in Nottingham and we have plenty to celebrate. August 25 is now known as Nottinghamshire Day where we mark the history and traditions of the county. To help you celebrate, we have compiled a list of all things Notts you should feel proud of.

We will also discuss the axing of some bus services in the county as well as a selection of Nottinghamshire pubs that have been recognised by CAMRA. Plus we have a real treat in store for any Lord of the Rings fans and I headed into town to spot the best-dressed person keeping dry from the rain.

Feel proud

Nottinghamshire has plenty of open green spaces including Wollaton Park (Liyuan-Liu)

Today is Nottinghamshire Day, marking a time to celebrate the county, its history and traditions. When asked what they loved about Nottinghamshire some of the 1.2m residents said it's close to the countryside, there are lots of places to eat out, it's diverse, vibrant and friendly.

There is a lot to be proud of and life writer Lynette Pinchess has selected the eight good reasons to love living in Nottinghamshire. First and foremost, the most obvious thing to be proud of is the legacy of Robin Hood. Famous all across the world and his presence is felt around the city and the county.

We have a fantastic food and drink scene with Michelin-starred restaurants, we are home to one of the greatest live music venues in the country, Rock City and have homegrown acts including Jake Bugg, Sleaford Mods and Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Nottingham has a great nightlife scene which attracts visitors across the country but we also have an array of parks and green spaces. Not to mention our sporting prowess with most recently Forest's return to the Premiership after 23 years. Find out what else to be proud of here.

Axed services

A trentbarton bus (Derby Telegraph)

A number of Trentbarton bus services are set to be withdrawn across Nottinghamshire. The bus company says it was "hit very hard" by the pandemic leaving some routes not returning to pre-covid levels.

The services making a loss will now either face the axe or be adapted from October 2 this year. Trentbarton says the return evening journeys after 7pm on the My15, from Ilkeston to Long Eaton, will no longer be running. The nines will undergo changes to improve reliability and an earlier morning journey from Sutton to Derby for commuters, while skylink Derby will feature improved frequency to East Midlands Gateway and Kegworth.

Diseworth and Long Whatton will no longer be served by this service. Skylink Nottingham's East Midlands Gateway to Loughborough journeys are to be withdrawn, including evening journeys to and from Coalville after 8pm. The threes' Mansfield night owl will be withdrawn. Find out what other services will be affected here.

Trivia question: What do the 'D' and 'H' in DH Lawrence stand for?

The answer to today’s trivia question is at the bottom of the newsletter.

Street style

74 year old Kath Shipman stood out in her bright outfit on the rainy day (Nottingham Post)

On this dark and drizzly day, Kath Shipman stood out in her bright-coloured outfit. The 74 year old described her style as "old in body but young in mind". She says she buys clothes as long as they are in bright colours. Kath, originally from Nottingham and now living in Selston, said: "I just like bright colours and I like to keep up with the latest styles even though I am older." She gets her inspiration from looking online and in shops. She added: "As long as it is not too young looking for me, I will buy it. My daughters even borrow my clothes."

Outfit breakdown:

  • Blazer - Marks and Spencer
  • T-shirt - Sainsbury's
  • Jeans - Marks and Spencer
  • Shoes - Tesco
  • Bag - Debenhams

Award winners

Local pubs across Nottinghamshire have been recognised by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) for their locally brewed beers and ciders. A micropub in Hucknall has taken the top spot in the annual Nottingham LocAle competition.

Byron's Rest in Baker Street was once a sewing shop and was awarded first place. It follows public nominations over the course of the year and a visit by CAMRA judges to 12 finalists across the area. They awarded scores for the quality and range of locally produced drinks.

The 2022 finalists include Bath Inn in Sneinton, Cross Keys in Nottingham, Poppy & Pint in Lady Bay and the city centre's Vat & Fiddle. Read the full list here.

Movie marathon

Showcase Cinema is hosting the event (Joseph Raynor/ Nottingham Post)

Gather all your hobbits, elves and dwarfs and sit tight for a mammoth ten-hour Lord of the Rings movie marathon. Fans of the series can watch all three of Peter Jackson's films back to back at Showcase Cinema.

The films will be shown in 4K for one day only. Watch Frodo Baggins' journey through Middle Earth unfold in his effort to destroy the one Ring.

The movie marathon will take place on Bank Holiday Monday 29th August, starting at 11am. Mark Barlow, UK general manager of Showcase Cinemas, said: “We know that Lord of the Rings fanatics often sit down to watch all three movies back-to-back, but may have only done this at home. So we wanted to give them the opportunity to watch the legendary trilogy where they were intended to be seen - on the big screen.” Tickets can be booked online here.
