The Nottingham gay venues we have loved and lost

Nottingham's LGBT+ pub scene has had a difficult time over the past few years, especially during Covid restrictions. While the scene has some dedicated bars, there are many that have opened and closed in recent years.

LGBT+ pubs haven't always been as visible on our city streets as they are today and many venues had a secret life as gay spaces. Two of the earliest Nottingham LGBT+ venues were the Flying Horse Walk on Cheapside which opened in the 1960s and The New Foresters which opened in 1958.

Many bars had side entrances and secret rooms which were sectioned off with 'private party' signs for those in the know. Both the Dog and Partridge on Lower Parliament Street and The Hearty Goodfellow bar on Maid Marian Way had these entrances at the time.
