Within months of Queen Elizabeth II handing over the keys to the first residents of the new estate in 1972, Glasgow Council began to be flooded with complaints over chronic damp spreading through the newly-built blocks at Hutchesontown E.
Replacing the area’s unsanitary and densely-packed 19th century tenements that had housed upwards of 27,000 people, the new 'Hutchie E' scheme consisted of a dozen pre-fabricated seven-storey deck access blocks and two 24-storey tower blocks by Gilbert Ash (Scotland) Ltd.
But a crucial flaw in the design of the new homes would see half the scheme condemned and razed to the ground within just 15 years.
