The 'north-south divide' which puts people in Salford and Manchester at higher risk of death

People living in areas including Salford and Manchester are among the most likely to die from lung conditions, according to new research published today.

Hospital admissions for people suffering from conditions such as asthma, pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), are much higher in deprived areas, analysis from the charity Asthma and Lung UK showed.

Of all 549,349 deaths in England in 2020/21, around 9 per cent were due to respiratory causes, of which most were down to pneumonia and COPD, the PA news agency reports.
