In recent years, tie-dye has returned in a big way. Big-name designers began sending patterns down their runways again. Which led to tie-dyeing becoming a summer staple, even this time around. But COS is bringing something new to the party in the form of an ancient Japanese craft.
Shibori, which means to squeeze or wring, involves resist-dyeing to create an array of "colors, designs and patterns." Back in the 8th century, the traditional practice exploded in popularity in Kyoto. Fast-forward to 2024 when artist Kazuki Tabata begins creating pieces for COS using the distinctive hand-dyeing methods through his maison, Tabata Shibori. "Shibori embodies the wrinkles and dye that can only be created by human hands," explains Tabata.
