‘The Muppet Show’ Review: Our Beloved Muppets Are Back at the Perfect Time

For many of us, Kermit the Frog and his band of Muppets remind us of growing up and joy. The Muppet Show led to films and specials that continued to grow the love for the Muppets for years to come. And now, The Muppet Show has returned.

A new special celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and directed by Alex Timbers. It stars Sabrina Carpenter as the show’s host and truly feels like a warm hug. If you’ve ever watched The Muppet Show, then you know what the show has the ability to do. It is joyful and a celebration and that’s what they’ve done for the 50th.

If you’ve ever thought to yourself that you wish you could see Carpenter, Miss Piggy, and Kermit all singing “Islands in the Stream,” then you’re in luck! But, again, if you know The Muppet Show, you know that kind of chaos is what made it special.

Gonzo is rolling around on skates listing Best Supporting Actress winners, everyone wants their time to shine, and it really is an emotional and special nod to what makes The Muppet Show special. The only problem? It instantly made me want more.

A perfect use of Sabrina Carpenter

Part of what made The Muppet Show fun was that the host shaped how the Muppets interacted. And this time around, Miss Piggy is definitely jealous of Sabrina Carpenter. And the show used the comparisons between the “Manchild” singer and Kermit’s love to their advantage.

Miss Piggy doesn’t like Kermy talking to her and the rest is written in Muppet show history. All your favorites are there, Carpenter sings “Manchild” with the chickens, and you will cry over how much the Muppets continue to be the best because that’s what has always made The Muppet Show special.

Watching this, I realized how easily it’d be to have this kind of joy in our lives on a regular basis. Why don’t we have The Muppet Show back? Is there a reason we’re all a little sadder without them when, instead, I can have Gonzo, Fozzie, and Kermit in my life regularly?

Hopefully, the happiness we all have over this special will encourage creatives to bring our Muppets back to us but for now, we do get to see Miss Piggy trying to push Sabrina Carpenter out of a boat and then, instead, singing a love ballad with her.
