The most crime-ridden streets in Neath

There were more than 200 crimes committed in Neath in just one month, official data shows.

And the most recent figures, which show the number of different crimes reported to police for December, 2021, also reveal the most crime-ridden area of Neath was the Neath East area, with 94 incidents.

We've analysed data from the Police.UK website to work out the most crime-ridden streets and where the most offences took place in each area of the town.

The street/area with the highest number of crimes recorded in December, 2021, was Old Market Street in the north of the town, with a total of 10 crimes recorded. Eight of these related to shoplifting. The B4434 Prince of Wales Drive and Elias Street had seven crimes reported each, whilst Glyn-y-Coed Road, Briton Ferry Road, Osborne Street and Windsor Road had six crimes reported each.

The worst area of Neath for anti-social behaviour in December was the B4434 Prince of Wales Drive, with three incidents recorded, whilst Elias Street was the area with the highest number of violence and sexual offences incidents that month.

Crime data is broken down into "major" and "minor" crime types, with each incident given a different label to categorise what kind of incident it is.

These categories include burglary, criminal damage, sexual offences, violence against the person, fraud and forgery, to name a few. Whilst "additional crime" covers a broad range of offences not covered in other categories, including, but not limited to, homophobic crime, knife crime and gun crime.

We've kept the same labels in our report as recorded in the data.

Neath North

In December, 2021, there were 79 crimes reported in the Neath North area. The crimes reported the most were shoplifting (17 incidents), anti-social behaviour (15 incidents), violence and sexual offences (15 incidents) and criminal damage and arson (11 incidents).

There were also nine incidents related to public order offences, four incidents related to drugs, there were four "other theft" crimes, one bicycle theft incident, one burglary incident, one "theft from the person" and one vehicle crime incident.

In terms of individual streets in the Neath North area, police.uk data shows there were 10 crimes recorded on Old Market Street. Of these 10 crimes, eight were incidents of shoplifting, one incident involved anti-social behaviour and one involved a public order offence. There were also three further crimes recorded elsewhere on Old Market Street, two incidents of criminal damage and arson and one incident of anti-social behaviour.

Another street with a high number of crimes reported for the period December 1 to 31, 2021, is the B4434 Prince of Wales Drive in Neath with 12 crimes in the area, seven of which occurred "on or near [the] Parking Area" on the street. Of these crimes, three were incidents of anti-social behaviour, two were criminal damage and arson and two were breaches of public order. There were a further five crimes recorded in nearby Water Street; three incidents of shoplifting and two incidents relating to criminal damage and arson.

Another street with multiple crimes recorded was Glyn-y-Coed Road, with a total of six crimes recorded: three of these were incidents of violence and sexual offences, two were incidents of criminal damage and arson and one was an incident of anti-social behaviour.

There were four crimes recorded in Windsor Road in December, 2021, four in Maes-Yr-Haf Road, four in The Parade and four in or near shops at the top of Queen Street.

Police data reveals there were 30 crimes reported in the Neath South area in December, 2021. Of these, 12 were incidents of violence and sexual offences, five involved anti-social behaviour, five criminal damage and arson, three vehicle crime, two drugs and there was one incident of bicycle theft, one incident related to public order and one other theft crime reported.

The street with the most crimes reported was Burnside, with four on or near the road. One of these crimes involved anti-social behaviour, another involved criminal damage and arson, another involved drugs and another was simply labelled as "other crime".

The street with the second most crimes reported in Neath South was Talbot Road, with three crimes reported in or near the road. Two of these crimes involved violence and sexual offences, and one involved criminal damage and arson.

There were 94 crimes reported in the Neath East area for December, 2021. More than 40 of these involved violence and sexual offences (44 incidents), there were 12 incidents of anti-social behaviour recorded, 12 of public order, eight of criminal damage and arson and 18 other crime incidents.

The street with the highest number of crimes recorded in the Neath East area was Elias Street, with seven on or near the street. Four of these involved violence and sexual offences, one involved criminal damage and arson, one is categorised as "other theft" and one is simply categorised in "all other crime".

Another street with a high number of crimes reported was Briton Ferry Road with six: two crimes of anti-social behaviour, one incident involving drugs, one involving criminal damage and arson, and two 'other crime' incidents. There were also six crimes recorded in or near Osborne Street; three of which involved violence and sexual offences, one burglary, one "other theft" and one "all other crime", and six recorded in or near Windsor Road, including three of violence and sexual offences, one of anti-social behaviour, one of burglary and one involving drugs.

Moreover, there were five crimes recorded in or near Exchange Road and in or near St Catherine's Close also. There were also four crimes recorded in or near the following streets in Neath East: Whittington Street, Greenway Road and Burrows Road.
