With the average house price in the UK now at a record high of £368,614, first-time buyers are being put under even more pressure when it comes to affording a home. Many people who had plans to buy their first house may think that getting a foot on the property ladder is now completely out of reach.
However, it is still possible to find a reasonably priced property by being savvy when it comes to saving and choosing the area that you want to live. There are certain parts of Greater Manchester where house prices are much more affordable, making them a great choice for first-time buyers.
Using the most up-to-date house price data from Rightmove, we have picked out the cheapest areas of each borough where the average price of a home is less than £200,000.

Bolton
Bolton is one of Greater Manchester's more affordable areas to buy a home, therefore there are a few places where house prices are cheap. The town of Farnworth is the cheapest part of the borough, where you can buy a house in the region of £151,959.
Kearsley is also an affordable option for first-time buyers, with an average house price of £162,612 in the town. Little Lever also has prices lower than £200,000, with the standard cost of a home here around £175,136.
Bury
As a slightly pricier borough, Bury only has one area where homes cost less than £200,000.
For first-time buyers wanting to live in Bury, the cheapest place to buy a home is Radcliffe. The market town has an average house price of £191,191 which is much less than its surrounding areas.
Manchester
Those wanting to buy their first home in an area nearer to the city centre have lots of choice, as there are a fair few places in the Manchester borough with house prices lower than £200,000.
The cheapest area to buy home in Manchester is the inner-city suburb Harpurhey, which has the lowest average house price of just £125,091.
Other affordable areas for first-time buyers are Belle Vue, Collyhurst, Gorton and Newton Heath, as properties in these parts of the borough cost less than £160,000.
There is also Beswick, Blackley, Bradford, Cheetham Hill, Hulme, Moss Side, Moston and Openshaw where you can buy a home in the region of £170,000 to £180,000, as well as Crumpsall, Longsight, Miles Platting and Rusholme with house prices just less than £200,000.
Oldham
House prices are fairly cheap across Oldham, making it another one of the region's more affordable boroughs for first-time buyers to live. The cheapest area of Oldham is Hollinwood, which has an average house price of £154,203.
Other lower priced areas in the borough are the village of Lees, where a home will cost you around £169,538, Chadderton with an average house price of £186,912 and Failsworth with homes priced around £197,483.
Rochdale
First-time buyers wanting to live in Rochdale have a good selection of affordable choices. The cheapest area of the borough is Castleton, where homes are priced at around £143,893.
In the town of Milnrow and the village of Nehwey, house prices are fairly cheap and range between £170,848 and £174,288. You can also buy your first home for an affordable price in Heywood and Middleton, which both have an average house price of around £189,000.
Salford
The city of Salford has a few areas where house prices are lower than £200,000. The most affordable part of the borough to live is Little Hulton, with an average house price of £158,549.
Although slightly more expensive, the village of Cadishead and Salford Quays, which is a popular place for apartments, have reasonably priced houses often selling between £197,843 and £198,618.
Stockport
As a dearer part of the region, there is just one area of the Stockport borough with cheap house prices. First-time buyers can purchase a home in Reddish for around £198,433.
Tameside
Tameside's most affordable area to live is Ashton-under-Lyne, which has an average house price of £175,554. There are a few other parts of the borough with cheap house prices that are ideal for first-time buyers.
Denton, Droylden, Dukinfield and Mossley each have average property prices that are between £186,790 and £198,469.
Trafford
Trafford is Greater Manchester's most expensive borough to live, where house prices in some areas are as high as £849,118. Yet despite this, surprisingly there is one area where first-time buyers can buy a property for less than £200,000.
Partington is a town in Trafford with an average house price of £184,520, which is the cheapest price in the borough.
Wigan
Greater Manchester's cheapest borough to buy a home is Wigan, therefore there are several areas where you can buy a home for much less than £200,000.
Ince has the cheapest house prices across the entire region, with an average price of just £120,452. This is closely followed by Platt Bridge and Pemberton, where you buy a home between £120,452 and £127,518.
House prices are also affordable in Abram, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Atherton, Hindley, Leigh and Orrell, ranging from £155,567 to 187,765.
