'The Mexican People Deserved a Night Like This': Mexico's Javier Aguirre Reacts to Historic Win Over Ecuador

The 2026 World Cup has been a historic run for hosts Mexico, capped last night with its first knockout-stage victory in 40 years after a 2-0 win over Ecuador.

Although rain delayed kickoff, the celebration and passion inside Mexico City Stadium never stopped for a single second. In the stands, a sea of green jerseys roared on a Mexican side that delivered one of its most complete performances in World Cup history.

Ecuador, which entered the match after a historic victory over Germany, managed just one shot on target across 90 minutes thanks to a dominant collective performance from Mexico. First-half goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez gave the hosts control before they comfortably managed the second half to advance to the next round.

Since its 2-0 victory over Bulgaria in 1986 at the same stadium, Mexico had not won a World Cup knockout match. It lost each of its next eight elimination games, which is why Tuesday night's 2-0 victory over Ecuador turned into a celebration that lasted well into the early morning hours.

As it has become a tradition, hundreds of thousands of fans made their pilgrimage to the Ángel de la Independencia, a monument in Mexico City where supporters traditionally celebrate major sporting triumphs. Clara Brugada, Mexico City's head of government, confirmed that more than 1 million people gathered at the monument to celebrate El Tri's victory, representing just over 10% of the city's total population.

In the words of Mexico coach Javier Aguirre, the victory over Ecuador settled a debt the national team had long owed its supporters.

"The Mexican people deserved a night like this," he said during the postgame press conference. "This is a group that deserves everything it is experiencing. We are among the 16 best teams in the world. We are in a very good place, highly motivated and fully focused. We are a family, a true family."

When asked whether Mexico had finally accomplished its goal of breaking through and moving beyond the first knockout match, Aguirre was direct.

"Our obligation is always to give everything on the field. And if we play well, even better. Our duty is to give our best on the field, defend the national crest with dignity, and we have done that so far."

After holding a strong Ecuador side scoreless, Mexico achieved a feat matched by only two other teams. It became the third nation to win its first four matches in a World Cup without conceding a goal, joining Brazil in 1986 and Italy in 1990.

Mexico will look to make more history Sunday in its Round of 16 match while putting a remarkable streak at Estadio Azteca on the line.

Since hosting its first World Cup in 1970, Mexico has played 10 matches at the stadium, recording eight wins and two draws. A victory Sunday would finally erase the ghosts that generations of Mexican fans have tried to leave behind by sending El Tri back to the World Cup quarterfinals.
