The Mets Unveiled a Sponsorship Patch With a Hospital, and Twitter Had Jokes

You’ve got to hand it to the Mets: They know a thing or two about comedic timing.

With their sky-high payroll and roster full of superstars, New York’s other team can’t quite lay claim to the mantle of “lovable losers.” But no fan base knows misery quite like Mets fans do, and the hope and expectations the team carried into this season—followed by the crushing blow of reality in the form of devastating injuries—has certainly been difficult to swallow.

Even though the team’s crowded injured list gives its fans fits, neutral baseball fans were given the gift of the Mets’ latest sponsorship partner: an actual hospital.

The team unveiled its new uniform patch sponsor on Thursday, fittingly partnering with New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Given the key players occupying the IL—Justin Verlander, Edwin Díaz and José Quintana among them—it was a match made in heaven.

Baseball fans never have issues finding humor in the tragic inevitability of Mets futility. And in this case, the jokes pretty much write themselves. Here are some of the best social media reactions following Thursday’s announcement.
