The Mandalorian has finally returned to Disney+, but fans of the show have revealed one thing viewers need to know before diving in to its third season. The acclaimed Star Wars spin-off follows the adventures of bounty hunter Din Djarin – otherwise known as Mando – and his little green, Yoda-like friend, Grogu.
Its first series takes place five years after the events of 1983’s Return of the Jedi and the fall of The Empire, and helps fill in the gap leading up to franchise’s sequel trilogy. Starring the Last of Us star Pedro Pascal as the titular hero, the show has proved a huge hit for Disney, with its latest season becoming one of the most hotly anticipated shows of the year.
The first episode of season three dropped on Wednesday (March 1), but some viewers may be confused given how its last season ended. The blockbuster finale of season two saw Grogu whisked away by none other than Luke Skywalker, who pledged to teach the youngling the ways of the Jedi and hone his skills with the Force.

This latest episode sees Grogu and his father figure Din Djarin back together to continue their journey. In an interview with the Skytalkers podcast, series creator Jon Favreau confirmed that two years have passed between the season two finale and season three opener.
So what’s happened in between, and what have Mando and Grogu been up to that whole time? Fans on social media have revealed that another Star Wars series must be watched before catching up with The Mandalorian in order to fill in that two-year gap between seasons.

Season three picks up after 2021’s The Book of Boba Fett, which follows another masked bounty hunter made famous in the original Star Wars trilogy. His story arc becomes directly intertwined with The Mandalorian, with episodes five to seven of the Boba Fett series featuring several key plot points that set up this latest season – including how Mando and Grogu reunited.

@thejrod_87 echoed: “FYI, if you’re a Mandalorian fan and excited for the new season, you would have to watch the last 3 episodes of the Book of Boba Fett to know how we got to the beginning of season 3. #TheMandalorian.”

@caitieshangout added: “Season 3 of the Mandalorian is about to reveal who really watched The Book of Boba Fett or not.”
Luckily, all seven episodes of The Book of Boba Fett are available to stream on Disney+, giving fans the chance to give it a quick binge-watch before rejoining Mando and Grogu for more adventures in a galaxy far, far away.
