The major road closures planned in Swansea when the city stages the World Triathlon Para Series and IRONMAN 70.3

A series of temporary road closures will be in place in Swansea when the city plays host to the Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series and the legendary IRONMAN 70.3 where exceptional athletes will come up against an area of outstanding natural beauty.

The summer of endurance sport debuts with the Triathlon on Saturday, August 6, and leads into the following day with the IRONMAN 70.3. The events will take place throughout Swansea and Gower, affecting access to certain roads.

Here is a breakdown of the road closures over the weekend of sport affecting August 7 - 8. Emergency access will be maintained at all times.

Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series - August 4 - 6

The headline event of the Disability Sport Wales' Para Sport Festival. It will bring some of the best paratriathletes in the world to the city to swim, bike and run, with the SA1 Waterfront providing a hub for the action

The event will be preceded by a GO TRI Disability Aquathlon. This will provide an accessible swim-run opportunity for local people with a disability. There will also be a leg of the British Triathlon Paratri Super Series when up-and-coming paratriathletes will take to the course.

Volvo 2022 World Triathlon Para Series Swansea is one of three races of its kind in 2022 ahead of the World Triathlon Para Championships in Abu Dhabi. Swansea will follow Yokohama in May and Montreal in July and the event also takes place a week after Birmingham 2022 hosts a paratriathlon for athletes with a visual impairment.

This year’s event is part of a three-year commitment to host a World Triathlon Para Series race in Swansea through to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The racing will be available to watch around the course, as well as provide opportunities to volunteer and help make the event a success.

Here are the road closures planned:

UWTSD SA1 Campus August 4 - 6

  • The finish chute, finish line and post-finish services will be located in Kings Road after the junction with Island Road through to the west port gate. The footways alongside the River Tawe from Trafalgar Bridge around UWTSD and the tidal basin will be closed to the public.

Friday, August 5

Maritime Quarter, 9am – 10.30am*

  • Trawler Road and Dunvant Place, between Trafalgar Bridge and the junction with Oystermouth Road

Oystermouth Road, 9am – 10.30am*

  • Oystermouth Rd westbound between Somerset Place and Guildhall Rd South
  • Oystermouth Rd eastbound between Guildhall Rd South and West Way
  • Traffic coming from the east will be diverted across the Tawe Bridge and then north on the A483, before either taking the A4118 to Sketty Cross, A4118 and B4290 to St Helen’s or A4216 south towards Mumbles Road
  • Traffic coming from the west will be diverted onto A4216 Sketty Lane
  • Access to Sainsbury’s will be maintained.

SA1 Waterfront, 9.30am – 11am

  • Kings Rd northbound
  • Langdon Rd
  • Traffic will be diverted on Langdon Rd eastbound to the roundabout leading to Fabian Way

*These closures will be implanted on a rolling basis

Saturday, August 6

Maritime Quarter, 10am – 6pm

  • Trawler Road and Dunvant Place, between Trafalgar Bridge and the junction with Oystermouth Road
  • If you wish to exit the Maritime Quarter on Saturday afternoon, please park your car in Paxton Street car park before 10:00; there are two windows of time where a managed exit will be facilitated, between 14:00-14:20 and 15:30-15:45

Oystermouth Road, 10am – 6pm

  • Oystermouth Rd westbound between Somerset Place and Guildhall Rd South
  • Oystermouth Rd eastbound between Guildhall Rd South and West Way
  • Traffic coming from the east will be diverted across the Tawe Bridge and then north on the A483, before either taking the A4118 to Sketty Cross, A4118 and B4290 to St Helen’s or A4216 south towards Mumbles Road
  • Traffic coming from the west will be diverted onto A4216 Sketty Lane

SA1 Waterfront, 7.30am – 6.30pm

  • Kings Rd northbound

  • Traffic will be diverted on Langdon Rd eastbound to the roundabout leading to Fabian Way.
  • Residents in South Quay will not be able to exit from the underground car park after 7:30am on Saturday morning, but will be able to access the car park from 6:30pm on Saturday evening

IRONMAN 70.3 - August 7

IRONMAN 70.3 will make its debut on Sunday, August 7, hosting athletes with a middle-distance swim, bike and run event, the first of its kind to take place on Welsh soil.

Starting with a 1.2-mile swim at Prince of Wales Dock, athletes will undertake a 56-mile bike ride along the sweeping waterfront of Swansea Bay, through Mumbles, and across the hills of the Gower before completing a 13.1-mile seaside run. With an epic festival finish in Museum Gardens, athletes will race down the iconic IRONMAN 70.3 red carpet to receive the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea medals.

Mumbles

  • Mumbles Road will be closed Southbound ONLY up to Village Lane between 06:00 – 10:00am
  • Cars will be able to travel Northbound from Village Lane (towards Swansea for the duration of the closure
  • ACCESS ADVICE – There will be a one-way diversion for residents needing to access Mumbles during the closures.
  • Residents will be able to travel west on the B4436, left onto Murton Green Road and then east on Mansfield Road, Murton Lane and Newton Road to access Mumbles Road.

Newton (B4593), Bishopston

  • The course will follow Plunch Lane and Higher Lane before turning left onto Southward Lane (B4593) / Caswell Road through Newton passing Caswell Bay Beach. Following Caswell Road North, turning left onto Pyle Road/Bishopston Road and left onto Pennard Road (B4436).
  • The named roads will be fully closed between 06:30 – 10:30.

Kittle, Pennard, Murton, Clyne Common

  • The outbound course follows Pennard Road (B4436) before turning right onto Vennaway Lane (B4436) and left onto the A4118.
  • The course also returns into Swansea using Vennaway Lane, Pennard Road and Northway (B4436).
  • Northway from Murton Green to Pennard Road and Vennaway Lane will be fully closed between 06:30 – 11:00 and then closed Eastbound / Southbound respectively between 11:00 – 13:45.
  • ACCESS ADVICE – From 11:00 – 13:45 there will be Westbound access on Northway, Pennard Road, and North-bound access on Vennaway Lane.

Parkmill, Penmaen, Nicholstan, Knelston (A4118)

  • The A4118 will be fully closed between 07:00 – 11:00

Llanddewi, Burry, Burry Green, Llanmadoc, Cheriton, Landimore, Leason

  • The course turns right into Llanddewi and travels through Bury and Bury Green before a right turn onto Kyfts Lane and a right into Cheriton and Landimore to Odwalls.
  • The above roads will be fully closed between 07:00 – 11:30.

Oldwalls, Llanrhidian

  • The course loops through Oldwalls and Llanrhidian so there will be two-way bikes at points.
  • Due to this from Fairyhill east to the B4271 junction with Cilibion Park Farm will be fully closed from 07:00 – 11:30 and closed Westbound only from 11:30-13:45.
  • ACCESS ADVICE – New Road (B4295) will be unaffected by the closures. The yellow routes shown on the maps are clear of all road closures and give access up to Llanrhidian filling station at all times.

Welshmoor, Penuel

  • The course continues East past Woodfield Animal Sanctuary, through Penuel and right at the Cillonnen Road junction down to the B4271.
  • The above roads will be fully closed from 07:00 – 12:00.

B4271, Llethryd, Cillibion, Reynoldston, Fairyhill

  • The course loops through the named locations with sections of two-way bikes, before travelling East on the B4271 towards Upper Killay.
  • The above roads will be fully closed between 07:00 – 13:00.

A4118, Swansea Airport, Fairwood Common, Langrove

  • The course turns right at the junction of the B4271 and the A4118 before Upper Killay, and travels south on the A4118 to Langrove.
  • The A4118 is closed Southbound only from 07:00 – 13:30.
  • ACCESS ADVICE – Vehicles will be able to travel north on the A4118 during the road closure times. There will be a traffic managed vehicle crossing point northbound only for traffic travelling towards Upper Killay between 07:00 – 13:30.

Swansea City Centre – Oystermouth Castle

  • Somerset Place will be closed to cars between 04:00 – 14:00.
  • The southside of Oystermouth Road (Westbound) will be closed between 06:00 – 17:00. Cars will be able to travel Eastbound on Oystermouth Road as normal throughout the day.
  • There are two managed vehicle crossing points on Oystermouth Road. Please use the designated vehicle crossing locations to make your crossing as quick as possible. There is a one-way traffic managed crossing system for access in and out of the Maritime Quarter
  • For access into the Maritime Quarter use Glamorgan Street, Oystermouth Road and cross the road closure into Dunvant Place. For access out please exit past the Civic Centre then right on to Oystermouth Road. There may be delays using these crossings at busy times.
  • Pedestrian Access to Swansea Beach, Blackpill Lido, The Skate Park, Swansea Footgolf, The Secret Beach Bar and Kitchen will be maintained as normal.
  • The cycle path will be closed from Lilliput Lane to Swansea, pedestrian access will be maintained throughout.
  • The run course will be busy between 11:00 – 16:00 so please bear this in mind when accessing the beach and the surrounding area.
  • The southside of Oystermouth Road (Westbound) will be closed between 06:00 – 17:00. Cars will be able to travel Eastbound on Oystermouth Road as normal throughout the day.

Kings Road

  • Between the Sail Bridge & the Forum Building Car Park will be closed 04:00 – 10:00 on Sunday for pedestrian safety

Swansea city centre course info

After the swim in Princes Dock the athletes will run over Sail Bridge to transition. They will start the bike course from East Burrows Road car park, travelling onto Somerset Place and west on Oystermouth Road (A4067). One side of the Sail Bridge will be open for pedestrians on race morning and Somerset Place will be closed to cars between 04:00 – 14:00.

The bikes will continue along the bay through Mumbles, around The Gower before returning to East Burrows car park via Oystermouth Road . The two lap run course, leaves East Burrows car park and uses Swansea Bay Cycle Path down to the Lilliput Lane/TA Centre. On the return they will use the bike path before joining Oystermouth Road through Sketty Lane Car Park. After their second lap they head to the finish line in Museum Gardens.
