- The Queen's coffin is set to be flown from Edinburgh Airport on a Royal Air Force aircraft to RAF Northolt — accompanied by Princess Anne — after last night's procession to St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.
- The Royal Parks in London has asked visitors to stop bringing Paddington Bears and marmalade sandwiches as a tribute for the Queen, explaining that non-floral objects and foodstuffs negatively impact the park's wildlife.

- Actor, musician, artist and revered Victorian Aboriginal elder Uncle Jack Charles is being mourned as cheeky, tenacious and the "father of black theatre" after his death aged 79. His niece Ajia Jacklyn Charles-Hamilton told the ABC it had been an emotional 24 hours as family gathered by her uncle's bedside at the Royal Melbourne Hospital before he passed away peacefully this morning (Uncle Jack's family has given permission for his name and image to be used).
- The BOM has officially declared a La Niña is underway — it typically brings wetter than average conditions to Australia's north and east. It's the third La Niña summer in a row and ups the risk of rain and flooding in the coming months. Having two La Niñas in a row is pretty common, but three is far more unusual.
International news: What's happening around the world
- The US Justice Department says it's willing to accept one of Donald Trump's picks for an independent arbiter – known as a special master – to review documents seized during an FBI search of the former president's Florida home last month. According to department lawyers, Raymond Dearie, a former chief judge of the federal court in New York's Eastern District, has indicated he's available and "could perform the work expeditiously" if appointed.
- Eight people have died and almost a dozen more are injured after a fire in an electric scooter showroom in India. Police say the fire broke out late Monday (local time) in a hotel basement housing the showroom, and that the scooters were parked at the time.

- The 2022 Emmys. Succession and Ted Lasso were among the big winners at this year's awards celebrating all things television. - Falls Festival. Organisers have announced that the Victorian leg of the New Years festival is relocating to inner-city Melbourne due to a planning permit issue. Secret Sounds, the group that puts on Falls, also noted that "an extensive program of works is currently underway" to prepare for the Byron leg of the festival after the site was heavily impacted by wild weather at this year's Splendour in the Grass.
