- An Adelaide man who lost $36,000 in a sophisticated phone scam is preparing to take his bank to court, saying it's not doing enough to get his money back. Michael Edwards received a call from someone claiming to be a fraud investigator from the National Australia Bank, with the phone number and text messages appearing to be official — NAB says it will try to recover the money, but that can be difficult once the funds have left a victim's account

An 18-year-old man charged with dangerous driving following a crash south-west of Sydney that killed five teenagers will return to court today. Tyrell Edwards was the sole survivor when the car he was driving struck a tree at Buxton earlier this month — he was earlier denied bail, but could re-apply

- Hurricane Fiona has struck the south-west coast of Puerto Rico overnight, with the system causing an island-wide blackout and forecast to produce landslides and catastrophic flooding. Health centres have been running on generators, some of which have failed
- Russian President Vladimir Putin has brushed off Ukraine's counteroffensive efforts and said Moscow would respond more forcefully if its troops were put under further pressure. It comes after Ukrainian authorities reported the discovery of a mass grave containing the bodies of 17 soldiers in Izium

- Melbourne's earthquake. ICYMI, an earthquake struck Port Phillip Bay outside Melbourne early Sunday morning — there was no significant damage reported and the Bureau of Meteorology confirmed there was no threat of a tsunami
- The Brownlow Medal. Carlton's captain Patrick Cripps has won the highest individual honour in the AFL for the first time, beating favourite Lachie Neale of the Brisbane Lions by just one vote in the final round of the count. He's the first Blues player to win the Brownlow since Chris Judd in 2010 (and as always, the red carpet was red hot too)
