One thing you’ll be hearing about today: The US is warning Russia 'won't stop'
- The United States believes Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for a long conflict in Ukraine, with a key official warning Moscow won't stop at conquering the eastern Donbas region
- US director of national intelligence Avril Haines is warning of unpredictable military escalations from Russia in the coming months, adding that even if Russia takes the Donbas, Mr Putin won't be satisfied:
- Overnight, Russia pummelled the vital port of Odesa, Ukrainian officials said, in an apparent effort to disrupt supply lines and Western weapons shipments critical to Kyiv's defence
- And Ukrainian officials said they had found more than 40 bodies in the rubble of a building near Kharkiv that was hit by a Russian strike weeks ago
News while you snoozed
Let's get you up to speed.
- Elon Musk says he'll reinstate Donald Trump's Twitter account, calling the ban on the former US president "morally wrong and flat-out stupid". Mr Trump has already indicated he will stay on his own social media platform, Truth. Mr Musk said permanent bans on Twitter accounts should be rare and reserved for accounts that were scams or automated bots
- Sri Lanka's security forces have been ordered to shoot violent protesters in an effort to contain increasing civil unrest. The order came after violent clashes left eight people dead and prompted the resignation of the prime minister
The news Australia is searching for
- Queensland flood: There's major flooding north of Townsville where almost 160 millimetres has falllen overnight. The BOM expects the Bohle River at Mt Bohle will surpass record flooding levels set in January 1980, with the swollen catchment already sitting at 7 metres
One more thing: The massive FIFA game franchise is over (as you know it)
It's a three-decade long, multi-billion-dollar partnership — and now they're officially breaking up.
Months of tense negotiations between video game company EA and FIFA ended overnight, without an agreement to extend their deal.
The partnership had been a big source of revenue for the football body, and FIFA was seeking at least double the $US150 million it got annually from EA Sports (its biggest commercial partner), according to the New York Times.
EA says it's planning to launch a rebranded version of the game, EA Sports FC, next year which will have more than 300 licensing partners, including the Premier League, LaLiga and the UEFA.
But FIFA-controlled events (like the World Cup) won't be included.
That's it for now
We'll be back later on with more.
