‘The local police don’t care.’: Michigan woman goes to Walmart fitting room. Then they notice something fishy

A Michigan woman is drawing attention after posting a TikTok that appears to show a small camera mounted in the ceiling near Walmart fitting rooms. The footage, which has now surpassed 1.6 million views, has sparked widespread concern over customer privacy and prompted both Walmart and law enforcement to respond.

TikTok creator @yourmomsaidthat filmed inside a Walmart store while pointing her phone toward the ceiling above the fitting rooms. The footage shows what appears to be a small black device positioned in the rafters and angled toward the top portion of the changing area.

At one point in the video, her husband urges her to escalate the issue publicly. “You should post that on their website,” he says.

In a second clip, the creator tells viewers that she already contacted the store about the device. “I really hope that they fix the camera issue,” she says. “I called and told them, but it doesn’t sound like they’re gonna do anything about it.”

She then asks her husband to describe what he saw. “A camera in the rafters right above the fitting room pointing at an angle right down into the top of the fitting room,” he says. “You might not be able to see it.”

Commenters Are Concerned

As the video circulated, many viewers urged the couple to contact law enforcement. One commenter wrote, “You should tell the police.”

The creator responded directly to those messages in writing, claiming that police involvement did not lead to action. “Um they’re refusing to take it down and the local police don’t care,” she wrote.

Others focused on the appearance of the object itself. One person wrote, “Not even a NORMAL WALMART CAMERA! this looks like a employee did.”

Another viewer commented on Walmart’s approach to loss prevention, writing, “Walmart is so obsessed with making sure no one steals that they don’t even care to put a camera in the fitting room that is crazy.”

Several others urged the couple to involve the media directly. “Send this to every news station you can I bet they’ll care then,” one person wrote.

Walmart Denies Any Fitting Room Surveillance

The Mary Sue contacted the Walmart Supercenter located in Shelby Township, Michigan, for clarification. A store operator denied that any camera inside the store records within a fitting room.

Surveillance Laws Around Fitting Rooms

In Michigan, as in most states, recording inside locations where individuals reasonably expect privacy, including fitting rooms and restrooms, is illegal. Even if a camera is placed outside of a fitting room, placement and angle still matter, particularly if the device could capture any portion of someone while changing.

While retailers routinely use surveillance for theft prevention, those systems are typically positioned to monitor store aisles, entrances, exits, and checkout areas. Cameras are not legally permitted inside dressing areas.
