The legendary RPG series that inspired The Witcher is finally coming to Xbox and PlayStation

An armored knight faces off against a dragon in the original PC version of Gothic 2.
  • Gothic, Gothic 2, and Gothic 3 are coming to modern Xbox and PlayStation consoles
  • The three games are set to release throughout the year
  • Those who pre-order the upcoming Gothic 1 Remake get immediate access to the original game

All three classic Gothic titles are finally releasing on PlayStation and Xbox this year.

The first of the legendary role-playing games (RPGs), Gothic Classic, is dropping in July 2026. It's a massive experience with more than 50 hours of gameplay and was a pretty big deal when it first launched back in 2001. It had a uniquely reactive world, filled with characters that abided by their own schedules - getting up in the morning, going to work, eating meals, and interacting with each other.

You play as a prisoner trapped in a distant mining colony that's been sealed off from the outside world. Tasked with delivering a letter to the leader of one of the colony's many warring factions. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt Red has cited the old game as a major source of inspiration, and I would recommend it to any fans of the genre, provided they're willing to put up with a little jank.

The original game was made by the now-defunct studio Piranha Bytes, but an expansive remake (rather unimaginatively titled Gothic 1 Remake) helmed by new developer Alkimia Interactive is in the works and comes out on June 5, 2026.

Pre-orders recently went live, and those who place one on consoles get immediate access to Gothic Classic as a bonus — skipping the wait and letting you experience the original game ahead of the remake.

Gothic's two sequels are also being re-released for Xbox and PlayStation as Gothic 2 Complete Classic and Gothic 3 Classic. They launch on September 29, 2026, and November 24, 2026, respectively.

Gothic 2 Complete Classic includes both the original game from 2002 and its massive Night of the Raven expansion, giving you more than a hundred hours' worth of content to explore. Gothic 3 Classic has also been upgraded compared to its 2006 first iteration, with a community-made 'patch 1.75' included from the get-go, offering a wealth of quality of life improvements.
