As Mayor Sadiq Khan announces plans to expand the capital’s Ultra-Low Emission Zone by the end of the 2023, we speak to Dr Gary Fuller, an air pollution scientist at Imperial College London, who runs the Londonair website.
Dr Fuller analyses how the existing scheme for central London is working out, and discusses toxic air increases again as the post-Covid commuters return to work.
The announcement - subject to a consultation process - comes about six months after the ULEZ went into operation, covering the area up boundaried by the north and south circular roads, after previously covering only central London.
Unlike the Congestion Charge, the ULEZ is in operation 24 hours a day over the 365 days a year.
Petrol cars driven into the zone must meet Euro 4 standards for exhaust emission, which became mandatory for all new cars manufactured after 2005.
