As Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took on his first PMQs on Wednesday afternoon, he promised his government would make decisions that were “fair and compassionate”.
The debate began with the PM defending his decision to reappoint Suella Braverman as Home Secretary, just a week after she was forced out of the role for breaching ministerial code.
Labour has demanded an inquiry into her reappointment on the grounds of ‘national security’, after she admitted sending official documents to a Tory backbencher using her personal email last week.
The government also announced that the Chancellor would delay his Halloween fiscal announcement until 17th November, when Jeremy Hunt will present a full Autumn statement for the medium-term.
And during PMQs it was revealed that the government will U-turn on another of Liz Truss’s policies, and keep the ban on fracking, sticking to the pledge from the Conservative’s 2019 manifesto.
In this episode of The Leader podcast, the Evening Standard’s Political Editor Nicholas Cecil examines Rishi Sunak’s performance during PMQs and discusses the policies and decisions announced by the government today.
