The latest on Australia's wet weather: flood levels and the areas to watch

Major flooding is continuing along a number of rivers in northern Victoria and much of New South Wales.

It comes as further rain and thunderstorms threaten to increase the flood threat for eastern and south-east Australia.

Where to watch today

Large parts of Narrabri in north-western New South Wales have been evacuated ahead of a major flood peak today, while Moree remains at major flood level, although the Mehi River is slowly receding.

The Murray River at Moama has exceeded the 1993 major flood level, with a height of 94.92 metres above sea level. The river is currently at 94.93 metres, and is expected to peak later today.

A trough is moving through the state's west, bringing further heavy rain and thunderstorms. Authorities have warned further rain could cause flash flooding in communities along the river, such as Moama and Echuca.

In Victoria, enhanced rainfall associated with an offshore low is also possible in east Gippsland, while further rainfall is expected across eastern Victoria today into Wednesday.

"They've been spared a little bit, compared to the rest of the state and, while the rainfall totals aren't meant to be excessive, they'll still be enough to probably put a bit of pressure on the river systems in that part of the world," senior meteorologist Kevin Parkyn said on Monday.

Showers and thunderstorms will also contract into Queensland, with severe thunderstorms expected today in north-east New South Wales and south-east Queensland.

The latest flood warnings

There are currently flood warnings in place across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia.

You can find the complete list on the Bureau of Meteorology's website.

What to expect tomorrow and beyond

The Bureau of Meteorology expects the weather to become more settled mid-week, although showers and possible storms will continue in Victoria, Tasmania and southern New South Wales on Wednesday and Thursday, with possible heavy falls in Tasmania.

  • Rainfall totals of 25 to 50 mm are likely across south-east South Australia, eastern and southern New South Wales, and much of Victoria and Tasmania.
  • Total rainfall of 50 to 100 mm is more likely along the Victorian ranges, New South Wales south coast and much of Tasmania. Isolated higher totals in excess of 100 mm are possible.

The Bureau says the rain is likely to produce localised flash flooding, while rising rivers are expected to cause renewed or prolonged flooding for already-inundated catchments.

The latest climate driver update will be released today

The Bureau of Meteorology will release its latest climate driver update this afternoon.

It is expected to include updated estimates about when some of the factors fuelling Australia's sodden spring could end.

Check back later for further updates.
