Years after its original console debut, The Last of Us Part 2 is finally headed to PC, joining the first entry on Steam and the Epic Games Store with its Remastered edition. Naughty Dog's sequel saw its PS5 upgrades earlier in 2024, so PC players will hopefully see something a little more on par with the technology jump.
Perhaps it wasn't the biggest reveal from The Game Awards in 2024 after old Naughty Dog job postings asked for experience exceeding the bounds of reason for current gen console tech. The Last of Us Part 1 also made the jump to PC last year. Both Naughty Dog games were once exclusive to PlayStation, boding well for those of us sticking to one machine.
Here's everything we know about The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PC.
When is The Last of Us Part 2 PC release date?
The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will release on April 3, 2025, for players on PC. As revealed during The Game Awards 2024, the Ellie-focused sequel heads to PC with a few upgrades beyond the original PS4 release.
On PC, we're getting the PS5's Remastered version, which Sony is bringing to both Steam and the Epic Games Store. The PlayStation generational upgrades include features like behind-the-scenes developer commentary, the No Return roguelike mode, and performance improvements.
The Last of Us Part 2 PC trailers
Here's the PC reveal trailer for The Last of Us Part 2
Naughty Dog and Sony revealed The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered for PC with a new trailer during The Game Awards, but there's not much to glean in terms of differences for the PC release. It's all clicky fungus, angry-as-hell flashes of Ellie, and tragedy. Extra helpings of tragedy over the first, but I'll leave those details out.
The PC release was developed alongside Nixxes Software, the same studio that worked on other Sony ports like Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Ghost of Tsushima. Iron Galaxy, the same studio on Part 1, also worked on the project. So, not really unfamiliar territory if you're looking for ways to compare this latest PC port.
The Last of Us Part 2 PC features and requirements
What features are in the PC version of The Last of Us Part 2?
In a PlayStation Blog post, Naughty Dog got into more detail with TLOU's second definitive edition. The short version is that you won't be missing out on anything console players saw added in the PS5 release. The Last of Us 2 Remastered includes:
- 4K Fidelity Mode and a 1440p upscaled to 4K Performance Mode
- No Return, a roguelike survival mode
- The Lost Levels, playable sequences cut from the original with dev commentary
- Guitar Free Play, a moody standalone musical mode for some relaxing guitar strumming
- Campaign commentary, including bites from director Neil Druckmann, narrative lead Halley Gross, and actors Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and Laura Bailey
For now, we don't know the specs required to see more detail in Naughty Dog's nasty Fungus creatures, but the studio says it'll offer those details closer to launch. The PC version will include PlayStation DualSense controller support, "graphical improvements," and a couple of weapon pre-order bonuses, but otherwise, it doesn't seem like we're missing or adding anything much.
Will you need a Sony Account for The Last of Us Part 2?
According to the Steam description, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PC will require a PlayStation Network account.
It's not a popular choice, either, but TLOU Part 2 wouldn't be the first Sony game with outlandish singleplayer demands. We've seen PlayStation Network account requirements for its other heavy-hitters, like God of War Ragnarök and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. It's a pain for plenty of reasons outside of solely not being interested in setting up an online service account for a singleplayer game. For some folks, the PSN requirement means they're region-locked out of playing some Sony games altogether.
We've got some time before The Last of Us Part 2 launches on PC, but Sony isn't backing down on those PSN requirements, for now at least.
A Last of Us Part 2 port lines up with Sony's plan for the PC
Rumors of PC versions for Sony games go a lot deeper than just The Last of Us Part 2, especially as of late. Sony CEO Jim Ryan revealed in an interview with GQ that "a whole slate" of PC ports are coming from Sony's first-party lineup. That's incredibly exciting news that also confirms what we've heard in the past.
Media Molecule has spoken on several occasions about its plans to bring its open-ended creation tool, Dreams, to PC someday. Death Stranding and Horizon: Zero Dawn also both launched on PC in summer 2020.
In 2019, Sony finally caved on crossplay and is now officially supporting the technology. Today, you can play games like Minecraft, Fortnite, Rocket League, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare together across the PS4 and PC (along with Xbox and Switch, too). Game streaming subscription service PlayStation Now has an official PC client, effectively making the service's entire library playable on PC.
