The Last of Us had HBO’s second-biggest debut since 2010

All the positive buzz surrounding The Last of Us has culminated in impressive premiere figures, as it reportedly had the second-biggest debut for an HBO series since 2010.

According to Deadline, The Last of Us drew 4.7 million viewers across HBO Max and other streaming platforms abroad – coming in second only to House of the Dragon’s 9.9 million viewers. Sunday’s premiere accounts for roughly 20 to 40 percent of The Last of Us‘ total gross audience for each episode.

Executive producers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are, unsurprisingly, quite happy with the success.

“Our focus was simply to make the best possible adaptation of this beloved story for as big an audience as we could,” Mazin and Druckmann said. “We are overjoyed to see how many fans, both old and new, have welcomed The Last of Us into their homes and their hearts.”

Recently, Mazin spoke about how he believes The Last of Us is the best video game story, specifically because the characters were just “just people” rather than superpowered heroes. Agree or not, it’s certainly one of the better story-driven games out there.

Diehard The Last of Us fans were pretty happy with the first episode, based on the reactions on Twitter.
