The iPhone 18 Pro Is In Stores: What Actually Changed and What You Will Pay for It

The Briefing:

  • It's on sale now. US Apple Stores opened their doors at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, September 18, with the iPhone 18 Pro starting at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299. Both begin at 256GB and, for the first time in the Pro line, climb to 2TB.
  • The real upgrade is optical. The 48MP Fusion main camera introduces a variable aperture with four fixed stops — f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4 — driven by six physical blades, a trick that until now belonged to dedicated cameras.
  • Inventory decides everything. Anyone who skipped the pre-order is at the mercy of local stock: on Apple's website, delivery windows for fresh orders had already slipped into October days before launch.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max moved from keynote to counter. Apple's US stores raised the shutters at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, September 18, the date Apple set for the start of sales across more than 65 countries and regions. A second wave covering 20 additional markets follows on September 25.

The urgency isn't marketing. With pre-orders swallowing the first allocations, the physical counter became the fastest route to walking out with a phone today — and that inventory is counted store by store.

What it costs and what's in the box

Pricing opens at $1,199 for the 6.3-inch model and $1,299 for the 6.9-inch version, both from 256GB. The ladder now reaches 2TB, a ceiling no previous iPhone offered. Four finishes are available: black, silver, glacier and the newcomer, burgundy.

The box holds the phone running iOS 27 and a USB-C cable. Nothing else. The adapter is a separate purchase, and not just any brick unlocks the fastest charging: reaching 50% in roughly 15 minutes requires a 60W adapter that supports USB PD 3.1 with adjustable voltage. Wirelessly, a MagSafe charger paired with a 35W brick delivers that same 50% in half an hour.

What actually changes this generation

The heavy lifting happens in photography. Six laser-cut blades let the shooter pick how much light gets through, the way a DSLR does: f/1.48 for dim rooms or portraits with dissolved backgrounds, f/4 when the whole frame needs to stay sharp. In low light, Apple calculates the widest setting takes in roughly 50% more light than the previous generation.

Underneath sits the A20 Pro, built on a two-nanometer process. Apple says its seven-core GPU delivers as much as 40% more speed than the A19 Pro managed, and that a redesigned vapor chamber, tripling the surface area used in the iPhone 17 Pro, holds that performance steady during long sessions.

The Dynamic Island shrank and now juggles three Live Activities at once without giving up Face ID. Battery life climbs to 36 hours of video on the Pro and 45 on the Pro Max — a figure Apple frames as the biggest battery gain ever recorded on an iPhone, a superlative the company attaches specifically to the Pro Max. Both models sold in the United States run on eSIM only.

Software gets its own chapter: the phones ship with iOS 27 and Siri AI, the rebuilt assistant running on Apple Intelligence that Apple describes as more personal and more conversational.

Asia ran the rehearsal, and burgundy won it

Time zones handed Singapore the first sales of the day, and with them the first read on demand. At the retail chain Gain City, lines began forming at 5:30 a.m.; by 10 a.m. burgundy accounted for 46% of sales, more than double glacier's 23%, with black at 21% and silver at 10%, according to the retailer's own figures.

At that same location, the Pro Max took 78% of units, pushed along by the 1TB configuration. The number deserves a caveat: at the Apple Store on Orchard Road, the city's flagship, the Pro Max led the Pro only narrowly, though burgundy again finished on top with glacier close behind. More than 60% of Gain City's customers put an older device toward the purchase.

Resale pressure showed up early, too. Before 8:25 a.m., a single buyer had already carried 31 Pro Max units out of the Orchard Road store, in burgundy and glacier.

No state-by-state limits in the US — but plenty of shelf limits

Both models are available at every Apple Store in the country and through the online store. What varies is how much is left in each location, and that is where the pre-order made all the difference.

New orders were already under strain beforehand. On September 14, Pro Max delivery estimates had shifted to October 6-13 and Pro estimates to September 29-October 6, across virtually every color and capacity combination. Translation: ordering online today means waiting weeks; buying in store today means competing for whatever sits on the shelf.

Three things to settle before leaving the house

Confirm stock instead of assuming it. The Check Availability tool on Apple's site shows inventory location by location and refreshes in real time. Unreserved units tend to evaporate within the first hours of sales.

Do the trade-in math honestly. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon advertise credits of up to $1,200 for handing over an older phone, but that ceiling demands a recent model, a premium plan and payment spread across monthly installments over two or three years. A handset four generations old rarely comes close.

Budget for the charger. No adapter is included, and the one already sitting on the nightstand may not unlock full fast charging. It's a small line item next to the phone, but better added before the purchase than after.

What's left in the lineup

Anyone holding out for an entry-level model this fall will keep holding out: there was no standard iPhone 18 at launch this year. Industry reports place that phone, the 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air in spring 2027, though Apple has confirmed no dates.

The foldable, on the other hand, has a firm calendar. The iPhone Duo, unveiled alongside the Pro models, opens pre-orders on October 16 and goes on sale October 23 starting at $1,999.
